GULFPORT --- Charles F. "Shotgun" Slade, 70, of Gulfport, died Wednesday, December 27, 2000, in Gulfport.

Mr. Slade had battled congestive heart failure with courage and determination for seven years. He was a member of Bayou View Baptist Church where he was active in the BVD's (senior adults) and the Men's Sunday School Class. He had volunteered at the Seamen's Center before his failing health. He had a love for wood and delighted in giving his creations to visitors.

Mr. Slade enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of eighteen, and served for ten years including duty in China, Pearl Harbor and aboard the U.S.S. Waller and the U.S.S. John Hood of the Atlantic Fleet. Mr. Slade was retired from the MS Power Company Plant Jack Watson.

Mr. Slade is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Tinie Callahan Slade of Gulfport; two sons, Charles F. "Ricky" Slade, Jr., and wife, Charlotte of Gulfport and David W. Slade and wife, Sandra of Sylvania, GA; two sisters, Alidee Kitchens of Hattiesburg and Elora Broome and husband, Varnel of Sumrall, MS; beloved sisters-in-law, Pauline Wedgeworth and husband, Bobby of Gulfport and Wilma Vickers of Jackson; three granddaughters, Angela Grimstead and husband, Rick, Christie Slade and Bridgett Slade, all of Gulfport; two grandsons, Chad Slade and C.E. Slade, both of Gulfport; two great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He also left behind a faithful companion rat terrier, "Bouncer."

The funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bayou View Baptist Church in Gulfport where friends may visit an hour before service time. A graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at Highland Cemetery in Hattiesburg.

The family prefers memorials to the Building Fund of Bayou View Baptist Church, 4709 Chamberlain Avenue, Gulfport, MS 39507.
