Henry Ellis Slade

(10 September 1922 - 3 July 1955)
     Henry Ellis Slade was born on September 10, 1922 in Truxno, Union Parish, Louisiana.1 He was the son of Bill Ernest Slade and Callie Loucine Atkins. Henry Ellis Slade served in with the 7th Army, 63rd Division, WWII and attained the rank of Captain. Ellis saw action in Italy, France and Germany. He was part of the occupation forces after the war's end.2
     Henry married first Billie Ann Handley on November 25, 1944.2 He became an insurance salesman and later a science teacher at Neville High School, Monroe, Louisiana.2 He was a graduate of Louisiana State University.
     Ellis married second Carol Jean Phelps on September 3, 19543, the daughter of Clara Williams and Sam Phelps.4 Henry died on July 3, 1955 in Truxno, Louisiana, at age 32.1,5 He was buried in Conway Cemetery, Conway, Union Parish, Louisiana.5

     In September, 1903, the firm of Slade & Watson took out permit to erect four large one story brick buildings with glass fronts to be situated on the SW half of 600 Block on Polk Street in Amarillo, Texas. Sam had been successful raising wheat and also in the oil business.4 In July, 1904, S. J. Slade was one of the group of 12 people who submitted a proposal to buy the land for the Potter County Courthouse.5 Peter E. Boesen from Iowa published "The Daily Panhandle" and "Weekly Herald" 1907-1910 operating from the "Slade Building" at 616 Polk.6 Samuel died on June 9, 1924 in Amarillo, Texas, at age 707,8 and was buried in Woodland Cemetery, Rosebud, Falls County, Texas.8

     Hattie Ann Shaver was born on September 1, 1869 in Oakland, Union Parish, Louisiana.1 She was the daughter of Benjamin D. Shaver.
     Hattie married Ernest Emery Slade, son of Joseph H. Slade and Elizabeth M. Dumas, on October 10, 1888.1 Hattie died on January 14, 1962 in Elk City, Beckham County, Oklahoma, at age 92. She was buried in Roselawn Cemetery, Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas.
