James Madison Hollis

(16 September 1822 - April 1910)
     James Madison Hollis was born on September 16, 1822 in Jasper County, Georgia.1 He was the son of William Hollis and Rutha P. Robertson.
     James married Sarah Satterwhite, daughter of Edward Satterwhite and Susan Bartee, on December 2, 1841 in Harris County, Georgia.2,1 James Madison Hollis was purchased land Affidavit of Settlement by J. M. Hollis requesting a survey. He was purchased land Affidavit field notes for abstract 343, ordered copy from Arch & Recds Div, Texas GLO. James Madison was redheaded. The men operated a whisky still. Much of the information was obtained from granddaughter Ophelia who said James Madison went to TX, following the Sabine River after crossing into TX. He was purchased land Land patent issued: 160 Acres, located NW of Marshall, just East of Upshur Co. line & East of Old Diana in Upshur Co.3 He was purchased land Certificate of survey dated 6 Jan 1865 stating the land was surveyed 27 May 1859. 160 Acres on the waters of Big Cypress Bayou, N 55 W from Marshall... sold to James Caldwell in Harrison County, Texas, on August 7, 1866.4 He was purchased land J. M. Hollis, of Cooke County, bought 50 ac from John Roushey and wife Mary, of Cooke County, for $275.5 He was sold land J. M. Hollis and Sarah, his wife, of Cooke County, sold 01 ac to F. M. Stinson, for $10 cash paid in hand. on October 20, 1881.6 He was named guardian for James Madison Hollis on February 2, 1883 in Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County, Texas, M.7 J. M. Hollis and Sarah, his wife, of Hopkins County, sold 50 ac to Amos Shockley of Cooke County, for $400. in 50 Ac of Fauset Survey, 7 miles NE of Gainsville, Cooke County, Texas, on December 27, 1883.8 Grandaughter Ophelia Baker said they lived at Nocona, Grand Saline, Terrell, Red River Station, Grayson Ranch, and Sherman.9 He was likely buried in Oakdale Cemetery, North of Mountain View, where several members of his family are buried. at age 87.10 His obituary read as follows:

      Death of J.M. Hollis

Elder James Madison Hollis died Saturday afternoon at the home of his son-in-law, J.A. Colwell at his place, aged over 89 years. Death was caused by a general breaking down due to old age. He had been in failing health for about two years.

The deceased was born September 19, 1820, in Troop County, Georgia, where he grew up and was married in 1840 to Sarah Satterwhite. In 1856 the family moved to Harrison County, Texas. In 1848 the deceased became a minister of the Primitive Baptist Church and continued to preach until about two years ago. In 1894 the family moved to southeast Washita County, (Oklahoma Territory) and have resided there and in Mountain View up to his death. His dearly beloved wife died in 1901, after 60 years of perfect married happiness. Eleven children were born to this union, nine of whom grew to maturity. Those now living are: Mrs Susan Colwell, D.F, J.T., J.L., and A.M. Hollis.10
He was buried in Oakdale Cemetery, Washita County, Oklahoma.11

     Sarah Satterwhite was born in July, 1820 in Harris County, Georgia.1 She was the daughter of Edward Satterwhite and Susan Bartee.
     Sarah married James Madison Hollis, son of William Hollis and Rutha P. 'Sallie' was listed in 1880 census, Harrison Co, TX. Sarah Satterwhite was died on November 14, 1901 in Washita County, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma).6 Sarah apparently died after 1900 as she does not appear in 1910 census. It is likely she is buried in one of the unmarked graves in Oakdale Cemetery, north of Mountain View, where several of her children are buried.7

William Edward Hollis

     William Edward Hollis was born in 1843 in Harris County, Georgia.1 He was the son of James Madison Hollis and Sarah Satterwhite. William Edward Hollis served in Enlisted in Waterhouse's Regt age 20 on March 31, 1862 in Texas.2
     William married Ardecia Ann Bateman, daughter of Alfred J. Bateman and Margaret C. [?], circa 1864 in Texas. William died in February, 1881 in Hopkins County, Texas.3,4 He left a will in Texas and it was probated 1883.5 He were placed under guardianship of James Madison Hollis on February 2, 1883 in Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County, Texas.6

     Rutha married William Archie Penny on July 15, 1882 in Hopkins County, Texas.1 Rutha died on January 21, 1943 in Mountain View, Washita County, Oklahoma, at age 76.2
