Vernon W. Slade

     Vernon W. Slade was born on October 21, 1946 in Suffolk, Virginia.1,2 He was the son of William Alvie Slade and Gilma Byrd.3 Vernon died on August 31, 2002 at age 55.1 He was buried in Great Fork Baptist Church Cemetery, Suffolk, Virginia.2 His obituary read as follows:

      KILL DEVIL HILLS - Vernon W. Slade, 55, died Aug. 31, 2002 at Chesapeake General Hospital.

Born Oct. 21, 1946 in Suffolk, he was the son of the late William Alvie Slade and the grandson of the late Alvah C. and Geta W. Byrd. Mr. Slade was a Vietnam veteran, a member of Great Fork Baptist Church and a long time resident of Kill Devil Hills.

Survivors include his mother, Gilma Byrd Slade of Suffolk; two sons; his twin sister, LaVerne S. and brother-in-law, Irving C. White of Suffolk; a sister, Regina S. Holt and a brother-in-law, Charlie Holt of Richmond; a niece and a nephew; many cousins; an aunt, Cathleen Horton of Chesapeake; and a long time friend, Rozella Carter of Kill Devil Hills.

A funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Great Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Jonathan C. Judy officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home.4

William Daniel Slade1

(27 January 1931 - 18 December 1999)
     William Daniel Slade was born on January 27, 1931 in St. John's Twp, Hertford County, North Carolina.1 He was the son of John L. Slade and Mattie Laura Cleaton.1
     William married Rachel Williams in North Carolina.2 William died on December 18, 1999 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, at age 68.3 He was buried in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk, Virginia.2 His obituary read as follows:

      William Daniel Slade Sr., 68, went to be with his Lord on Dec. 18, 1999. William was surrounded by his loving wife of 44 years, Rachel, his children and grandchildren. William and Rachel had resided in the 300 block of North St. for more than 20 years before temporarily relocating to Virginia Beach.

William was born to the late John and Mattie Slade on Jan. 27, 1931, in Saint John, N.C. After his marriage to Rachel Williams, they moved to Virginia and made Portsmouth their home for the past 40 years. He served in the Korean War. William served his apprenticeship at Norfolk Naval Shipyard and later worked at NAVSEC, where he retired after 33 years with civil service. They attended First Baptist Church of Norfolk.

He is survived by his four children and their spouses, Angela and Jimmy Jenkins of Virginia Beach, Pam and John Tudder of Charleston, S.C., William D. ''Bill'' Slade Jr. and Eleanor of Portsmouth, and Dianna and Gary Pignaloso of Washingtonville, N.Y; 13 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister, Ruth Newby of Norfolk; and a host of friends and family who loved him dearly.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the graveside in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Nelson F. Fields. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel, and also will be at 5508 Hill Gail Road, Virginia Beach. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
