News Item in The Herald (Melbourne) of May 24, 1935: Miner's Long Drive In Pain. After a five-gallon drum of earth had hurtled 20ft. down upon him in a gold mine shaft at Wattle Flat, near Creswick, at 4.30 p.m. yesterday, William Edward King, aged 43, asked his mate, who went down to rescue him, "Where are my false teeth?" Three hours later he died In the Creswick Hospital. This simple question led the two other gold prospectors who were working with King, Norman Lambert and Walter Horn, to believe that he was not critically injured, but that his leg had been broken. Lambert was working the windlass when the steel rope broke and the bucket fell upon King, who was at the bottom of the 70ft. shaft. Lambert was immediately lowered down to King by Horn. ACUTE PAIN. Suffering acute pain, King was hauled to the top of the shaft on the rope. He was carried by his two mates to a horse drawn lorry. With the injured man covered by coats, the party set out on a nightmare drive over an almost unmade road to Creswick. Several times King called upon his mates to set him down on the ground. This they did, aod gave him frequent drinks of water. With King in agony, It took the party two hours to cover the five-mile journey to Creswick.

News Item in The Argus of May 28, 1935: CRESWICK -There was a large attendance at the funeral on Saturday afternoon of Mr. William Edward King, aged 47 years, who died after he had been struck by a bucket-full of earth which fell 73ft. down a shaft.2

Samuel Slade

(from 1790 to 1800 - 1849)

The parents of this Samuel have not yet been identified and he appears only on the 1840 census in Bertie County. However, Y-DNA results obtained Sept 2011 for a confirmed descendant of this Samuel indicate that he has a common ancestor with the Samuel Slade of Southampton County, Virginia. Due to the close Y-DNA match and the fact that Bertie County, North Carolina is less than 50 miles directly South of Southampton County, Virginia, we have concluded that this Samuel belongs to the Southampton, Virginia Slade Branch. Anyone having further evidence of the parents of this Samuel, please contact the compiler below.
