1 Arlene Slade was born on October 1, 1923 in Union County, Arkansas.2,3 She was the daughter of Malvin Slade and Lena Hicks.3
Arlene married Dewitt Fikes on December 1, 1941 in Strong, Union County, Arkansas.3,4
Arlene married Theodore Roosevelt Cason on January 19, 1946 in Hamburg, Ashley Co., Arkansas.5 Arlene died on July 31, 1952 in El Dorado, Union Co., Arkansas, at age 28.6 She was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Union Parish, Louisiana.6 This is the only known photograph of Arlene SLADE. She resided in Crossett,
Arkansas (Ashley County) but later died in El Dorado (Union County) in a hospital from
injuries she sustained in a house fire. According to family accounts she was badly
burned. The stories tell me that she had lit a candle and as she walked by the candle
her nightgown caught on fire and things went tragically wrong from there. She was the
mother of five children at the time of her death Her youngest child at the time was just a
9 month old baby.
Arlene was a physically beautiful woman. I have been told over the years that this only
known photo of her does not do her justice to her beauty. She was only about 30 years
old when she died.7

Her name was Gwendolyn Ann SLADE (Franklin). More on her later. She had two children (a daughter and a son). Her son married a Lebanese Austrialian woman and lives in Australia.
