     Caroline married William Slade, son of William Slade, on July 16, 1837 in Middlesex, England, at St. Mary Whitechapel.3 Caroline died in 1874 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England, Q3.4

     Jessie S. Gaines was born on July 29, 1906 in East Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut.1 She was the daughter of Arthur H. Gaines and Amelia Warren [Gaines].1,2
     Jessie married Richard Ernest Slade, son of Albert James Slade and Anna Ruth Gaylard.1 Jessie died in 2007.3 She was buried in Center Cemetery, East Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut.3 Her obituary read as follows:

      Jessie (Gaines) Slade, 101, a lifelong resident of East Hartford, passed away on Thursday, (October 11, 2007). She was the widow of the late Richard E. Slade of East Hartford who died in 1981. Jessie was born on July 29, 1906, in East Hartford, and lived there her entire life. She was the daughter of the late Arthur H. and Amelia (Warren) Gaines. Her ancestors were among the founders of Connecticut and she was very proud of her history. Even at this stage in her life she had an interest in the current events of her town, the state and the world around her. She was employed by Phoenix Mutual Insurance Company and Connecticut Bank and Trust Company. Some of her interests and contributions to the community were: President of the Parent Teachers Association, member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the East Hartford Historical Society. She was a Life Deaconess of the First Congregational Church, and a member of the Women's Guild and the Business & Professional Group. She was the chief organizer representing her church for the town of East Hartford's Bicentennial Celebration. Jessie leaves to mourn her passing her two children, Arthur G. Slade and his wife Susan, of Groton, MA and Jessie S. Slade, of East Hartford; her grandchildren, Arthur G. Slade Jr., and his wife Elizabeth, of Frederick, MD and Amy Lee Slade, of Arlington, MA. The family will receive callers from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, October 15, at the Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Ave., East Hartford. On Tuesday, October 16, 2007, friends and relatives may pay their final respects at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, East Hartford followed by a burial service at Center Cemetery, East Hartford. published in The Hartford Courant (CT) - Sunday, October 14, 2007.2

Arthur Gaines Slade1

     Arthur Gaines Slade was born on March 9, 1931 in Hartford County, Connecticut.2 He was the son of Richard Ernest Slade and Jessie S. Gaines.1
     Arthur married Susan Sorbo.1 Arthur was President of the Animal Rescue of Boston for 28 years, retiring in 2005 after 41 years service. Arthur was a former President and Director of the New England Federation of Humane Societies and from 1983-1986 served as national President of the American Humane Association.2 Arthur died on April 13, 2017 in Groton, New London County, Connecticut, at age 86.2 His obituary read as follows:

      GROTON -- Arthur Gaines Slade, 86, of Groton, died Thursday, April 13, 2017, at in his home surrounded by his family.
Arthur leaves his wife Susan Sorbo Slade, a son Arthur G. Slade Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Heath Slade of Frederick, Maryland, a daughter, Amy Lee Slade and her husband, James L. Baglini, of West Roxbury, MA, a sister, Jessie S. Slade of East Hartford, CT, his niece Kathleen and her husband David, his nephew Paul and his wife Dina, his nephew Thomas and his wife Beth, and his nephew John and his wife Tina.
Arthur was born on March 9, 1931, in Hartford, CT, to Richard E. Slade and Jessie G. Slade. Hegraduated from University of Connecticut in 1956.
Following graduation Arthur served as a first Lieutenant in United States Army, for two years active duty on the facility of Nike Guided Missiles at Fort Bliss, Texas. He remained in the Army Reserves until 1965, achieving the rank of Captain. After his Army service he first worked for the Connecticut Humane Society, as a law enforcement agent and then as Director of the Animal Department. In 1964, Arthur became the Director of Operations for the Animal Rescue League, of Boston. In 1976, Arthur became Vice President and in 1977, President of the Animal Rescue of Boston for 28 years retiring in 2005 after 41 years with the title of President Emeritus.
Arthur was a former President and Director of the New England Federation of Humane Societies, and past Treasurer and Director of New England Livestock Conservation. He was President of the Pets and People Foundation, for 5 years at the time the Foundation was established. During the 1970s and 1980s, he served as a Director of the American Humane Association, for 12 years, and he was National Chairman of the American Humane Animal Advisory Committee, for 10 years. From 1983-1986, he was the national President of the American Humane Association. He was Chairman of the New England Service Council for the Protection of Children and Animals for over 20 years. He served as a Director of the Red Acre Farm Hearing Dog Program in Stow, MA, and he assisted in the formation of the program. Arthur was a Director and Treasurer for U.S. financial affairs of the World Society for the Protection of Animals with headquarters in London, England.
During his long career in the humane field he received many honors and awards; among them were the Distinguished Alumni Award, College of Agriculture, University of Connecticut in 1986, National Lifetime Achievement Award, American Humane Association in 1995, and the Anna Harris Smith Award, given at the Animal Rescue League, of Boston's 100th anniversary. In addition, he was the first recipient of the Arthur G. Slade Lifetime Achievement Award, given by the Animal Rescue League, of Boston in 2005. He was also a member of the Executive's Club of the Boston Chamber of Commerce and the Boston Rotary Club.
Arthur's family wishes to thank the Groton Police Department, the Groton Fire Department, Care Dimensions hospice, Deaconess Abundant Life Services, and in particular his aide, Richard Kisakye, and Dr. Arjun Butte for their guidance and their compassionate care.

Slade was born on May 9, 1940 in Bristol, Hartford County, Connecticut.2 He was the son of William J. Slade and Catherine Elizabeth Spielman.1 Richard died on November 4, 2015 at age 752 and was buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Plainville, Hartford County, Connecticut.2
