William Slade was born circa 1815 in Virginia.1
William married Josephine L. Park on June 26, 1834 in Washington, District of Columbia.1 William was a porter at Brown's Indian Queen Hotel, Washington D.C. The hotel was a posh favorite of Washington's elite. in 1850.2 William was a messenger at the Treasury Department in 1861. Worked with Elizabeth Keckly to create the Contraband Relief Association to provide assistance to freed African Americans arriving in Wasington D.C.2 William was was appointed to Abraham Lincoln's White House as an usher, one of the highest posts in the Executive staff. William became a confidant of the President as he decided questions of emancipation. in 1862.2 William was appointed steward by President Andrew Johnson in 1865.2 He left a will on March 5, 1865; Bequeathed all physical property to his wife Josephine L. Slade, his stock, property or estate of any sort held by, derived from or inferred by the Columbian Harmonial Cemetery Association. As long as she remained a widow, Josephine was able to enjoy all of his real estate. Should she remarry or die, the value of the real estate should be divided equally among his children or their heirs.He lists his children as: Eunice W. Wormley (grandchild) Rachel Slade, Maria Louisa Slade, William C. Slade, Andrew F. slade, Jepe B. Slade, Catharine N. Slade and William P. Parke, brother-in- law.3 William died in 1868 in District of Columbia The funeral was officiated by Byron Sunderland, President of Howard University and former Senate chaplain. President Johnson paid his respects to the family home.2
