Rev. Herbert Woods "Woody" Slade, Jr., age 61, passed away suddenly at his home in Flora, Indiana on July 4, 2016. Woody was born in Shelbyville, Kentucky on Nov. 10, 1954, the son of Betty (Ferguson) and Herbert W. Slade, Sr.Woody was raised in Lexington, Kentucky where he was a 1973 graduate of Tates Creek High School, received his B.S. from Transylvania University in 1977 and his Masters of Divinity from Lexington Theological Seminary in 1980.Rev. Slade served as minister of the Lebanon First Christian Church from 1978-1980; the Evansville Bethany Church from 1980-1987; the First Christian Church of Rensselaer from 1987-2001; the First Christian Church of Rochester from 2001-2009 and was the current minister of the First Christian Church of Flora, serving as minister there since 2009.On June 17, 1978, in Versailles, Kentucky, Woody married Barbara Smart who survives.Surviving with his loving wife Barbara is their son, Mark (wife Jody) Slade and four grandchildren, Kristen and Aidan Slade and Steven and Leah Krzan, whom he loved spending time with. He was preceded in death by his parents.Woody became involved in whatever community he resided in, serving as a Cub Scout leader, a member of the Rotary and of the Lions Club. He enjoyed being a member of Community Theatre and was a 24-year member of the Rensselaer Carnegie Players and was currently serving on the Board of Director's. Woody's hobbies included woodworking, playing golf and traveling.
Friends will be received at the First Christian Church of Rensselaer on Friday, July 8 from 1 - 7 p.m. Funeral services will be at the First Christian Church of Rensselaer Saturday, July 9 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Carolyn Reed and Rev. Fred Dorisse officiating. Burial will follow at Weston Cemetery in Rensselaer.1
