     William W. Slade was born on February 18, 1838 in Caldwell County, Missouri.2,3 He was the son of Clark Marion Slade and Emily M. Coburn. William enlisted as a Private in Co. L of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Sept 1, 1861 and was mustered into federal service on Sept 24. He was promoted 5 times, finally to 2nd Sgt on Sept 16, 1865. He was mustered out Feb 15, 1866.4
     William married first Hattie B. Thomas on March 23, 1868 in Hancock County, Illinois.5
     William married second Anna Siegrist on October 13, 1875 in Illinois.6 The 1880 censu shows Rosa Kaser, 13, as William's adopted daughter. It has not yet been determined if this is a child of Anna by previous marriage or not.7 William W. Slade died on August 6, 1933 at age 958 and was buried in Harveyville Cemetery, Wabaunsee County, Kansas.8
