Jay O. Slade, 85, of Bennington, Vermont died suddenly at his home on April 26, 2018.
Born July 7, 1932 in Troy, New York, to Jay Walter Slade and Ruth (Sherwood) Slade, Jay grew up in North Hoosick, New York. He received a Regents Diploma from Hoosick Falls High School followed by an apprenticeship at Watervliet Arsenal in Watervliet, New York, to train as a tool and die maker. A sergeant in the Army artillery, Jay was stationed for two years in Korea for the post-war phase. On September 12, 1959, Jay married
Sandra Sue Maynard of Bennington. Jay was employed continuously until his passing, spending many years at Bijur Lubricating Corporation, and Gurley Precision Instruments. Under the guidance of Douglas Trumbull, he was part of the creative team of VFX professionals in Lenox, Massachusetts who created special effects for the movie Judge Dredd, and for a trio of presentations for the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Mr. Slade was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Sandra Sue. Jay is survived by his son
Jeffery Alan, and his wife Katherine Freeman Slade of North Bennington;
his daughter Kristen Marie Slade of Waterville, Vermont;
granddaughter Jennifer Leigh Slade of Annapolis, Maryland; and
grandson Andrew Parker Slade of North Bennington.
Throughout his life, Jay held active memberships in the Hale Mountain Rod and Gun Club, the Vermont Philatelic Society, and the Rutland Railroad Historical Society. In his youth, he was a member of the North Hoosick Fire Department. As a young man, Jay enjoyed enduro motorcycle racing. He was an accomplished downhill skier and was an alpine ski instructor at Prospect Mountain in Woodford, Vermont. His lifelong interests included 18th century Americana, military history, and model HO gauge railroading. Jay was a master craftsman whose skills embraced jewelry making, metal fabricating, and furniture making.
There will be calling hours at the E.P. Mahar & Sons Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 2nd from 5:00-7:00 PM.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, May 3rd at 11:00 AM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Bennington Cancer Center Community Crusaders through the office of Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.1

Sandra enjoyed attending auctions, collecting antiques, dolls, and Bennington pottery. An avid reader, she enjoyed good books accompanied by her adored cats.
Sandra was an accomplished knitter, and took pleasure in sharing that skill with her family.
Survivors include her husband, Jay O. Slade of Bennington; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Katherine Slade of North Bennington; a daughter, Kristen Slade of Waterville, VT; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Andrew Slade; a sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl and Gregory Jacobs of Bennington, two aunts, an uncle, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
