Glenn Ward Slade Jr.1

(22 July 1918 - 19 September 2005)
Glenn Ward Slade Jr. was born on July 22, 1918 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.1 He was the son of Glenn Ward Slade and Nann Zetta Stone.1
Glenn married Myra Nell Rowan, daughter of Samuel Nuel Rowan and Effie Stella Hobbs, on December 15, 1949 in Houston, Harris County, Texas. Glenn died on September 19, 2005 in Houston, Texas, at age 871 and was buried in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, Harris County, Texas.1 His obituary read as follows:

GLENN W. SLADE JR., Slade Glenn W. Slade Jr., devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away on September 19, 2005 in Houston, Texas. He was born in Chicago IL on July 22, 1918, the only child of Glenn W. Slade and Nann Zetta Stone Slade. Glenn graduated from University of Michigan with a Degree in Engineering and went on to the University of Chicago where he received his Degree in Law. Glenn pursued his career with Shell Oil Co. where he spent fifteen years. With his passion of large game hunting and wildlife conservation, Glenn decided to leave Shell and pursue his dream. As a world-class hunter in his own right, Glenn opened a sporting goods store. After many years of success, Glenn then opened, "Glenn Slade's Executive Travel". Glenn loved to travel and was very knowledgeable of the most exotic and remote areas of the world. He is noted for being a member of many prestigious clubs and organizations. Most notable is, "The Explorer Club" Glenn is noted to have discovered a region of the Yukon that until then was pristine and untouched countryside. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club, The International Professional Hunter's Club, The East African Professional Hunters Club and the World Famous, Mount Kenya Safari club as well as many other organizations. Glenn spent many years traveling the world over as a Big Game Hunter and Conservationist. Many of his trophies have in the past been donated to various Museums. One of Glenn's many accomplishments that he was truly proud of was in 1982, when he was presented the highly prized "Weathersby Award", for his collection of 183 species of the World's game animals as well as being the first to collect all of the North American, "Big 5" game animals, twice over and held a recorded world record for many years. Though many years were spent abroad, Glenn's heart was always at home. As a young man and after being discharged from the Army in San Antonio as a retired veteran of WW II, Glenn made Houston his permanent home where he raised his family and was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church for 35 years. Glenn is survived by his wife of 9 years, Carmella L. Slade, his sons, Dr. Stephen Slade and his wife Cindy, Glenn Slade III, Gregg Slade, and his wife Robin and grandson Ryan. He is also survived by his Mother-In-Law, Mary Steiner, three step-sons, his step-daughter and four step-grandchildren. Recently, Glenn celebrated his 87th birthday at home where he was surrounded by his family and many lifelong friends. We continue to celebrate his life and legacy. A fond farewell and tribute, well deserved by a man well respected and loved. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation at half past six o'clock Wednesday evening, the 21st of September, 2005 in the Chapel of J. B. Earthman Tanglewood, 5740 San Felipe @ Bering. There will be a vigil service starting at seven o'clock in the evening. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ten o'clock Thursday morning, the 22nd of September, 2005 at St. Anne Catholic Church, 2140 Westheimer. The Celebrant will be Reverend John Rooney. Rite of Committal will follow at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.2

Leona graduated from Pilchuck High School in 1936. She later worked in Seattle, WA where she met her future husband, Erwin Slade. Until the loss of her eyesight through macular degeneration, Leona was becoming an accomplished watercolor painter and played a lot of golf with her friends. As her eyesight diminished, she became very involved with the Braille Institute in Palm Springs and volunteered as a counselor and assistant for others with visual impairments. She loved flowers and gardening and always had beautiful floral arrangements throughout her home during the various holidays. In the fall, Leona was a fan of the Washington Huskies football team and over the years went to many games and post season bowls. She dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
