Marjorie Lovina Tubbs, formerly of Lansing Age 101, our loving mom, wife, sister, grandma passed away May 4, 2013 in Lansing. She was born July 3, 1911 in Convoy, Ohio the daughter of Clarence and Florence (Hinton) Slade and the family moved to a farm near Charlotte, MI when she was four. She attended rural schools and Olivet Public School during her first eight years of school. She graduated from Charlotte High School, Eaton County Normal and Michigan State University with a B.A. degree in Education. For her first nine years in teaching, she taught all eight grades in in rural schools. Then four years in Charlotte, MI, a year in Clearwater, FL and then she returned to Michigan where she taught the next twenty-four years at Barnes Elementary School in Lansing, MI. She retired in 1963 because of illness. She and her husband, Wilbur, to whom she married October 29, 1932, later moved to a cottage on Bear Lake for summer seasons, and a park called "Venture Out" for the next twenty winter seasons in Mesa, AZ. They returned to Lansing to live near daughter, Patricia Gleason. Marjorie joined the Charlotte "Maple City Chapter of Eastern Star" while in residence there and the "American Association of University Women" in Lansing, also "Superstition Chapter of the A.A.U.W." in Arizona while there, as well as the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel. Grandma loved to read, garden and cook. Preceding her in death were her husband of 68 years, Wilbur Tubbs in 2001, son, Richard Tubbs, sons in laws, John Yerke and Gerald Gleason; sisters and brothers, Karl Slade, Clarence Jr. Slade, Luman Slade, Theron Slade, Jeanette Foreman and great granddaughter, Melisa Harju. She is survived by daughter, Patricia A. Yerke- Gleason, 3 grandsons: Daniel (Margaret) Yerke, Ronald Yerke, James (Patti) Yerke; step-grandsons: Stephen D. (Sandy) Gleason and Timothy M. Gleason; 9 great grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren with 1 on the way and sisters, Helen McCain and Mary Ellen Smith. Funeral services Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Tiffany Funeral Home, 3232 W. Saginaw, Lansing. Visitation 1 hour prior to the service on Wednesday. He is preceded in death by his wife, Leolyn Slade; and his daughter, Connie Srigley. Survivors include 2 daughters, Rosalie (Sterling) Bacun of Howard, CO; Linda (Dale) Szaflarski of Fife Lake, MI; 5 grandchildren, Karen Bolger, Rochelle Herron, Wade & Brooke Bacun and Angela Cabello; his 3 great-grand-children; and his 3 sisters, Marjorie Tubbs of Ada, MI; Helen McCain of UT and Mary Ellen Smith of Lansing, MI. The concerns in the burned row which suffered practically complete losses were the Factory Glove store, R. E. Townsend, job printing plant; George E. Thomas, shoe shining parlors, bakery of F. M. Campbell; Arlington Hotel, offices of Oneonta Coal company, cigar and tobacco store of L. D. Slade, drug store of George Slade, Marble’s pool room; the liquor store of James Morton and the millinery parlors of M. and L. Stringham. The blocks were owned by the First National bank, E. R. Ford, E. E. Huntington, George L. Wilber, L. H. and Perry Blend of Oneonta; Dr. William R. Stewart of Bennington, Vt., and Mendel Brothers of New York city.2 He was propriator of a cigar store.3 He was a proprietor of a news store.4
