:: British Parliamentary Papers, Crime and Punishment vol 2
:::: William Smith, Eamouth, drunk, insolent and resisting a constable,50 lashes. This man was flogged about two years ago; he flinched muchthroughout the punishment; the skin was lacerated, and blood appearedat the 24th lash; he seemed to suffer great pain, which was evinced by suppressed groans; blood ran at the 45th lash; he cried out ‘domino’ when finished.
:::: Jon Tree, Asia, neglect of duty by feigning sickness, 36 lashes onthe breech. At the 11th stroke the blood appeared and continued running; he cried out loudly at every lash; this was the first time of corporal punishment. The boy suffered most severely, and in my opinion, 12lashes would have been sufficient for him.
:::: John Lenon, Mangles, absent one night from barrack without leave, 25 lashes. The skin torn at the 8th, and a slight bleeding at the 10thlash, at the 15th lash the akin was decidedly flayed off, the blood flowed slightly; the flesh much swollen. The severity of this manÂ’s punishment was manifest. He says he was never flogged before; I could not discover any marks of punishment on his back.
:::: William McLoughlan, America, having a stolen pair of shoes in his possession, 50 lashes. The skin was lacerated at the 25th lash; on being taken down the blood began to run very freely; this prisoner did not cry out; he, however, seemed to feel great agony.

:::: IN obedience to your letter dated 4th September, enclosing tile Circular No.:: 33-38 from the Honorable the Colonial Secretary, I have now the honor to:: submit to you the Daily Returns of Punishment which has been inflicted in:: Hyde Park Barrack during the month of September, with my remarks in the
:: margin, in strict obedience to the 2d para,atapli of the Circular.
:::: With reference to the 3d paragraph of the Circular, I beg to statethat I:: consider the present standard instrument to be, when properly wielded, fully:: sufficient for the punishment of such offences as are therein quoted, and:: that the mode of infliction of punishment in Hyde Park Barrack is such as to:: prove to the offenders themselves that no other sentiment but a desire of:: performing a most painful but necessary duty has ever actuated anyOfficer:: of any grade in that Establishment, while it most thoroughly administers the:: due punishment of offenders; and in further proof of the efficiency of the:: present cat, and of the mode of affliction, I beg to refer to you the
:: Reports of the Police Cases, Nos. 3, 8, 13, 24, and 40.
:::: With reference to the 4th paragraph of the Circular, and in obedience:: thereto, I beg to submit that in my opinion the scourgers should be picked
:: men of bodily height and power, and that at least two regular paid:: scourgers should be appointed solely for the duty of Hyde Park Barrack, it:: being impossible for any scourger to duly administer more than 150lashes in:: the course of one day. With this improvement, punishment would certainly:: become more severe; and it is more especially to be remarked that the first:: part of the punishment would be more acutely felt. A question may then arise:: for the consideration of Government, whether depending fully on the proper:: infliction of all sentences, they being carried into execution under the:: superintendence of a respectable and responsible Officer, the sentences
:: themselves may not hereafter be more lenient.
::
:: I have the honor to be,
:: SIR,
:: Your most obedient Servant,
:: (signed) Ernest Augustus Slade
:: The Principle Superintendant of Convicts
:: &c &c &c.
:::: 3. Daniel ALONE, Andromeda, Grossly neglecting his duty, 50 lashes. The:: prisoner cried loudly at the 2nd, and repeated his cries at every lash; at:: the 12th lash the blood was flowing largely; the prisoner seemed to suffer:: intense agony. I am of the opinion that this man was sufficiently punished:: at the 25th lash. Daniel ALONE states that he was flogged last Saturday, but:: the marks of punishment on his back were very slight indeed; this fact:: proves the necessity- not of increased punishment- but of the prescence of:: some responsible officer of character, whenever punishment is inflicted.

:: GLEANINGS.
:: MISS SLADE'S LOVE-LETTERS.
:: YORK HERALD, Oct. 1.:: Love-letters are occasionally found very pro- fitable to the penny-a-liner, when produced in court at the hearing of a breach of promisecase ; but it is not often that they are expected to pro- duce such large profits as were anticipated by two enterprising individuals whohave just met with their deserts at the hands of Mr. Justice Hawkins in the Central Criminal Court. Miss:: Augusta Ernestine Slade, who is a young lady of good connection, happened some years back to be travelling in Turkey, and at Constantinople she met with one Constantine Theodoridos, a Greek, a man, as we may suppose, of good ad-:: dress and not without 'expectations,' as a ma- trimonial engagement was in time made up be- tween him and Miss Slade. However, in the year 1875, the match was for some reason broken off, and the public might never have heard of it,
:: but for certain circumstances which afterwards:: occurred. During the courtship, as a matter of course, letters very frequently passed between the young couple, and equally as a matter of course when the love-making came to an end the lady required the return of her letters. Here the knavery of Theodorides showed itself. Itis, however, but just to him to say that in the interval between his first meeting with Miss Slade and the breaking off of their courtship,he had, as it appears, lost his position as a mer- chant, and that his financial affairs had got into very low water. Well, the demand for the let- ters having been made, the fellow puts off the lady with various excuses, until meeting her in London he devised and told her the story that an Italian named Pablo Golera (the second defendant) had seized the box containing the letters as a security for a debt he owed him (Golera), and that he would not give them up unless £500 were paid him. In a subsequent interview the Greek actually sold back to the lady for a consideration of 20 some forty of her letters, which he professed were all he then retained. The next step is that Golera writes a letter to the lady's friends, threatening publi- cation of the correspondence unless the 500 should be paid him : then a friend of the family, a barrister, is consulted ; and finally the prison- ers are brought to justice. They have been sentenced to seven year's penal servitude. The case is happily of a nature which is quite ex- ceptional in this country, and we are fain to believe that such a plan of raising money would hardly have suggested itself to an Englishman moving in the same rank in life as the prisoners.
:: DAILY TELEGRAPH, Sept. 29.:: Two detestable scoundrels-a Greek named Constantine Theodorides and one Pablo Golara, also presumably of Levantine extraction-were on Thursday indicted at the Central Criminal Court for feloniously sending threatening letters and demanding by menaces large sums of money from Miss Augusta Ernestine Slade. Were there aught in the slightest degree equivocal in the conduct of the prosecution, or were there any- thing in the evidence adduced calculated to woumd the delicacy of a lady,we should not think of alluding to Miss Slade by name ; but she has borne herself throughout the whole pain- ful transaction so candidly and so discreetly, and has shown to her sex so bright and example of courage and dignity, that she may endure without flinching the ordeal of having her name, for the last time, associated with the two des- picable caitiffs who have just been sent as con- victs from the bar of the Old Bailey. . . . They were convicted, and Miss Slade, to her great honour, had the womanly tenderness to recommend the man who had so grievously wronged her, Theodorides, to mercy. Furtun- ately there was short mercy to be got for this mean hound and his fellow cur from Mr. Jus-tice Hawkins. His lordship said that he had the power to sentence them either to a term of imprisonment or to penal servitude for life ; but that deeming the last-named punishment too severe, and the former too lenient, he should send them to penal servitude for seven years. Mr.Justice Hawkins arrived, to our thinking, at a golden mean. Peual servitude for life is a punishment second in its awfulness only to death : it is, moreover, held in terrorem over miscreants who, closely akin as they are in ra- pacity and cowardice to Theodorides and Go- lera,display a more heinous degree of turyitude by threatening the personsfrom whom they strive to extort money with accusations of an unspeakably horrible nature. But the extor- tioner, from the top to the bottomof the ladder of crime, is a mischievous pest who must be tUmpeii out. He trios his rreniife V hand in writing anonymous letters, with the intent of breeding suspicion and misery in happy house- holds. He graduates in the full-blown villany of the ruffiian who holds the revolverof expos- ure at the head of his victim, and cries, defian- tly, 'Your money or your reputation.' No age and no sex are safe from his trickery, treachery, and greed. No social rank, no public fame can evade his rancour and his malice. Fortunately he overreaches himself sometimes, and then the law catches him and rends him with the strong teeth of its trap. It is to be hoped that the well- merited fate of ConstantineTheodorides and Pablo Golera will act as a salutary warning to the would-be extortioners and speculators in blackmail who are yet at large.
