Jasper Newton Burks was born on July 30, 1840 in Ste Genevieve County, Missouri.2,1 He was the son of Charles Burks and Elizabeth Murphy.
Jasper married Amanda Celestine Marshall in February, 1868 in Missouri.3 Jasper Newton Burks article in Democratic Dunklin co. News: " The farmers of Saline Co. are after Jasper N. Burks, state grain inspecter, by grace of the railroad commissioners, in opposition to the wishes of the people, with a very sharp stick. At the time of his appointment to the position they held indignation meetings and protested earnestly and vigorously, but their protestations were of little avail as the railroad commissioners did as they pleased in the matter. ... It is claimed, and truly too, that he is not competent to fill tthe position. Burks is a plug lawyer, politician and lobbyist and knows little about grain..." on June 11, 1870 in Missouri.4 Jasper died between August 7, 1930 and 1930 in Farmington, Saint Francois County, Missouri.5 He was buried in Knights of Pythias Cemetery, Farmington, Saint Francois County, Missouri.6,7 Tombstone says Capt Jasper Newton Burks, Co E, 2 MO Inf, C.S.A. His obituary read as follows:

Quoting from the obituary in the Farmington newspaper ( date and name unknown): In 1880 Mr. Burks moved to Farmington where he has since resided. His record as a lawyer and citizen is well and favorably known. He was active in Democratic politics and has served as State Senator from the Twenty-sixth District. He was a member of the committee that notified Grover Cleveland of his nomination for the presidency in 1892. In more recent years he was associated with Judge William Carter. He at all times stood for progressive public measures, both in public office and as a private citizen, and as a State Senator was an earnest supporter of our common schools. He served for a number of years on the Farmington Board of Education. He stood openly for principle above policy, and was the poor man's friend and champion. With him, integrity was wealth and character greater than riches."
