Ernest married Lena Anderson in 1953.2 Ernie worked for many years as a stevedore with C.N. Marine in North Sydney until his retirement. He was very active in local politics and served several terms as Ward Two Councillor for the Town of North Sydney. Ernie was a genuine people person and remained interested in the lives of others up until the time of his passing. Although his body failed him, his mind and memory remained sharp until his last days. The stories that he recounted were remarkable.3 Ernest died on June 7, 2019 in Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia, Canada, at age 85.1 His obituary read as follows:
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ernie Slade, dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, on Friday, June 7, 2019 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital at the age of 85. Born in Florence on February 22, 1934, he was the son of the late Jack and Violet (Patey) Slade.
Ernie worked for many years as a stevedore with C.N. Marine in North Sydney until his retirement. He was very active in local politics and served several terms as Ward Two Councillor for the Town of North Sydney. Ernie was a genuine people person and remained interested in the lives of others up until the time of his passing. Although his body failed him, his mind and memory remained sharp until his last days. The stories that he recounted were remarkable.
Ernie is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lena (Anderson) Slade; his daughters, Nina Slade, Westmount and Leanne MacKinnon, North Sydney; his son, Lorne (Margaret) Slade, North Sydney; daughter-in-law, Rosemary Coffin, Kanata, ON; five grandchildren, Carla, Amanda, Nicholas, Shannon, Victoria; five great-grandchildren, Mason, Emily, Benjamin, Jacob and Grayson. Also surviving are his brothers, John Slade, North Sydney, Donald (Anita) Slade, Sydney; his sister, Sylvia Fudge, North Sydney and Tammy Forrest who he loved like a daughter and who brought joy and comfort to his life.
He was predeceased by his son, Shawn Slade; sisters, Shirley MacDonald, Mae MacKinnon, and his brother, Robert Slade.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Northside Homemakers, VON, Hospice Palliative Care and EHS paramedics for the care and compassion shown to Ernie during his illness.
In keeping with Ernie’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service.
