Robert Slade was born on December 29, 1795 in Morden, Dorset, England.1 He was the son of David Slade and Elizabeth Smith.1 Upon the death of his Uncle Thomas, Robert inherited significant funds from Thomas' estate.2

John Slade1
(1819 - 9 January 1847)
John Slade was born in 1819 in Wareham, Dorset, England.1,2 He was the son of Robert Slade and Sarah Gardiner.1 Elected to the Newfoundland House Assembly, the youngest person ever elected.3 A grandnephew of John Slade, founder of John Slade & Co. Merchant Trade, John (b. 1819)started working at an early age in the business. By the time he was 23, he was manager of the business at Twillingate, Headquarters for John Slade & Co.3 Upon the completion of St. Peter's Anglican Church, Twillingate, NL, John donated a set of brass light fixtures and candle sconces from St. James Church in Poole, England. He also donated two brass plaques, one with the Lord's Prayer and creed and the other with the Ten Commandments. The plaques were hung on either side of the chancel window.4 John died on January 9, 1847 in St. James Churchyard, Poole, Poole Unitary Authority, Dorset, England.1 Memorial inside the church: Sacred to the memory of JOHN SLADE merchant of this town who died 9 Jan 1847 aged 28 years. Also of ROBERT STANDLEY SLADE who died at Fogo in the island of Newfoundland February 21st 1846 age 23 years. Also of ROBERT SLADE merchant and magistrate of this town, father of the above who died 3 Jan 1864 aged 68 years. His remains with those of his eldest son are interred in the churchyard near this place.1

James Slade was born on August 5, 1811 in Poole, Dorset, England.1,2 He was the son of Robert Slade and Mary Poole.3 James Slade was baptized on August 25, 1811; at St James Parish Church.1,2 His Uncle Thomas Slade, Newfoundland Merchant bequeathed £10000 to John Sladeto be split with his brothers and sisters; Mary, Robert, Sarah, James, Thomas, and Anna all under 25 years.4
Upon the death of his father, James and his brother's inherited considerable fortune and the Robert Slade & Co. Merchant Trade business in Newfoundland. James did most of the business operation for Robert Slade & Co. His brother John (1819-1847) was the manager of John Slade & Co. in Twillingate, while his brother Robert managed John Slade & Co. operation in Fogo. Two of the brothers died within three years, 1846-1849 each of them at a young age. The deaths probably contributed to the closing of the businesses by 1861.5 James established a firm named "Executors of Robert Slade. The Executors continued to operate Robert Slade & Co.
