Walter Slade was born in July, 1908 in Kingwell, Newfoundland.1 He was the son of Charlie Slade and Patience Jane Legge.1,2 Walter was listed as a crew member aboad the fishing vessel Frank Baxter, Offical # 141382, out of St. Johns. Nfld.
St. John's Nfld to Porto [sic] Rico from thence to any ports or places within the limist so 65 degrees North and 65 degrees South latitude to and rom as may be required for a period not excluding Six Calendar Months. Final port of discharge, St. Johns, Nfld.
Six hands all told shall be deemed the ships full compliment. No cash advanced, or liberty allowed at any port abroad except at the pleasure of the Master.Master John Murphy.
Walter's previous vessel had been the Mistletoe.3 He was listed as a crew member aboard the SS Imperialist, official # 148418, out of the Port of St. John's Nfld. The vessel was registered with 488 tons and 99 horsepower engines. The Imperialist was to "engage in fishery on the North Atlantic Ocean, from thence to any ports, or places in the Dominion of Canada, and/or Newfoundland to and from as may be required for a period not exceeding Six Calendar Months."4 Walter served in the Canadian Merchant Navy aboard the S.S. Grayburn (London, England.)2 Walter died on June 29, 1941 at age 32.2 Commended for Bravery - The Adiministrator of the Government has received a telegram from the Right Honourable The Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs to the effect that His Majesty the King has been pleased to give orders for publication in the London Gazette of the name of Walter Slade (deceased) of Kingwell, Placentia Bay, Third Officer S.S. Grayburn, as having been commended for brave conduct.

The Grayburn owned by Muir Young Limited, London, was torpedoed and sank in less than 15 minutes. Fourteen survivors were picked up by one of H.M. Ships. Others owe their lives to Slade who stayed onboard to lower the only boat that would swim. It was, however, swamped and the survivors clung to the wreckage. Throughout the ordeal of being brought onboard, having his foot set and being taken to the rescue ship he made no complaint but bore himself with great fortitude.
