Mary Eleanor Potter1
(23 May 1922 - 1 August 2017)
Mary Eleanor Potter was born on May 23, 1922 in Michigan.2 She was the daughter of William John Potter and Grace Maria.3,2
Mary married Henry Harvey Slade, son of Henry Herbert Slade and Jennie Sophie Swanson, in June, 1940 in Nashua, Iowa.2 Mary Eleanor Potter resided in DeKalb Twp, Dekalb County, Illinois, on May 2, 2012.1 Mary died on August 1, 2017 in Dekalb County, Illinois, at age 95.2 She was buried in Afton Center Cemetery, DeKalb, Dekalb County, Illinois.2 Her obituary read as follows:
Mary Eleanor Slade (nee Potter), 95, of DeKalb, Illinois, passed away on August 1, 2017, at the DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center.
She was born May 23, 1922, in Michigan, to the late William John and (Maria) Grace Potter. She joined older brother, John Gerard (Gerry), and sister, Edith (Godar), both deceased. Her mother and the 3 children moved to DeKalb, Illinois, so her mother could attend Northern Illinois State Teachers College (now Northern Illinois University).Mary attended DeKalb High School, graduating in 1939.While in high school, Mary's best friend, Genevieve Slade, set her up on a blind date with Genevieve's older brother. The rest is romantic history - she met her future husband of 57 years on this blind date, Henry (Hank) Harvey Slade, Jr. (deceased). They married in June of 1940 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale (Nashua, Iowa). Mary loved to tell this story. Early in their marriage, they rented several houses. Then, one day, the couple found the house of their dreams in the Better Homes & Gardens calendar. They purchased the blueprints and Hank and Mary built their house from the ground up in the early 50's. Hank learned how to lay brick and pour concrete and Mary learned how to swing a hammer and cut wood. The family lived in this house until 1970.
Mary and Hank had 5 children, Harvey James (Vivian Pennel) of Sycamore, Illinois, Richard Dwight, deceased, (Roberta Warren) of Livonia, Michigan, Kenneth Joseph (Jodi Willrett) of Malta, Illinois, Gary Paul (deceased), and Melinda Diane of Mentor, Ohio. Mary is also survived by 9 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Mary had many interests over the years; growing and hybridizing African violets, playing the organ, crocheting, painting, motor home camping, raising cats, researching the family's genealogy and enjoyed retiring to Sun City West, Arizona, with Henry. As Henry's health began to decline, they returned to DeKalb to be close to family and old friends. In her 70's, Mary discovered the internet where she bought and sold books on a prominent auction website, researched genealogical records and joined a major social media website. She made several "web friends" over the years.
Mary is loved and will be missed by many.
