Samuel Slade was born circa 1750 in North Carolina Many believe that he was the son of John Slade, Jr., of Hyde County, North Carolina. yDNA evidence confirms that Samuel Slade descends from the Hyde County, North Carolina branch of Slades. However, the direct link from Samuel to John Slade, Jr, has not yet been proven by documentation.1,2 He was the son of John Slade Jr.1
Samuel married Elizabeth [?].3 In the 1790 census Samuel is listed in the Cheraw District, South Carolina. On February 8, 1791, Samuel and Elizabeth Slade bought 100 acres of land on Muddy Creek and Big Pee Dee River from David Lee for the sum of ten pounds sterling money. Samuel & Elizabeth Slade sold their 100 acres on September 29, 1795 to Samuel Burkett for 25 pounds sterling. By 1800, Samuel Slade, Sr, is in Barnwell South Carolina. Living next door, is his son Samuel Slade, Jr. There is no further record of Samuel Slade, Sr, or his wife Elizabeth. It is assumed that both died before 1810.4,5,1

Benjamin Howard Slade, 97, formerly of 58 Bayberry Rd., Kingston, purchasing agent and secretary for Westcott-Slade-Balcom Co. of Providence for 50 years before retiring in 1974, died Thursday at the Scallop Shell Nursing Home in Peace Dale. He was the husband of the late Bessie (Allen) Slade.
Born in Bath, Maine, he was a son of the late Howard R. and Mary Imogene (McCurdy) Slade.
Mr. Slade was an Army veteran of World War I, and a past member of American Legion Post 39. He attended Brown University and was a member of Theta Delta Chi.
He was a 32nd degree Mason and past master of What Cheer Lodge 1. He was past high priest of Providence No. 1, and past grand high priest, grand chapter, of Royal Arch Masons. He was a member of Calvary Commandery 13 and the Palestine Temple, Providence. He was a member of the Scottish Rite.
Mr. Slade was senior warden at St. Augustine Church, Kingston. He was a member of the state House of Representatives for eight years in the 1940s. He was on the South Kingstown Republican Town Committee, and was a member of the board of directors of Hallworth House, Providence.
He leaves two daughters, Jane S. Prince of West Kingston and Deborah Slade of Mount Pleasant, Mich; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Augustine Church, Lower College Road, Kingston. Burial will be in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.
