At only 15 years old both his parents were killed in a car wreck. He and his younger brother Jack were then raised by Jennie and Ralph Smith in Ithaca, NY.2 Bill graduated from Cornell University. He entered the Army Air Corps and was pilot in the ferry service. He learned to fly in the early 40's as one of the few Americans that trained with the British RAF in Florida. He loved to fly and the ferry service allowed him to fly every type of propeller plane used in WWII, ferrying planes all over Europe and Africa.2

William Aumick Slade passed away on Memorial weekend May 25, 2013 at age 93. Bill was born on March 26, 1920 to William Clark Slade and Dora Aumick Slade in Troy, PA. At only 15 years old both his parents were killed in a car wreck. He and his younger brother Jack were then raised by Jennie and Ralph Smith in Ithaca, NY. At the time, young Bill was quoted in the newspaper as saying, "We all have to die sometime". This quiet, confident approach to life defined how he led his life as a man, husband, father and grandfather. Bill graduated from Cornell University. He entered the Army Air Corps and was pilot in the ferry service. He learned to fly in the early 40's as one of the few Americans that trained with the British RAF in Florida. He loved to fly and the ferry service allowed him to fly every type of propeller plane used in WWII, ferrying planes all over Europe and Africa. At 22 years of age, this grizzled veteran taught the 18 year old kids to fly from Casablanca to Cairo using rivers and trees as landmarks. His flying prowess earned him an invitation to join the elite pilots flying the president in Air Force One. In the 1950's, Bill married his first wife, Lorraine June Amundson and the couple had two sons. Decades later Bill met his second wife Terry Kamke and they enjoyed a wonderful life together until his death. They were married by the ship's Captain on a birthday cruise to Panama more than 20 years ago. Bill's passion in life was reading. He also loved orchids, golf, poker and bridge. He was an orchid judge and past president of the Central Florida Orchid Society. Years ago he bred pollens to create a new species of orchid. He was a master bridge player. He loved participating in tournaments and once played bridge against the famous Charles Goren. Bill and Terry won a bridge tournament just a few days before his passing. Until the night he died, he enjoyed his daily calls with his sons about their lives, their work, their travels, their hobbies and their children. He was mentally sharp even as his body failed. Bill is survived by ¿two sons, Jon Jeffrey (Bonnie), William Aumick Jr., four grandchildren, Stephanie (Chris Joneson), Nicholas, Jennifer and Sally, and a great granddaughter, Lily. He also leaves his second wife and loving companion, Terry Kamke. Services for William Slade are for family only.2

(The Ithaca Journal March 28, 2004)LONGWOOD, FL - John "Jack" Edward Slade, 81, of Longwood, FL, formerly of Ithaca, NY, died March 26, 2004. Mr. Slade was born October 28, 1922 in Troy, PA, the son of the late William Clark and Dora Aumick Slade.In 1935, as a result of an automobile accident that took the life of his parents, John and his brother came to Ithaca, NY, to live with Ralph and Jennie "Jackie" Frost Smith.John graduated from Ithaca High School, served overseas in WWII, graduated from Cornell University, and became employed in Mayer's Smoke Shop (where he had worked from age 12). After Ralph Smith died, John purchased Mayer's and operated it until retiring in 1979. For many years, he and his wife, Mary, lived at Maplewood Point on the west shore of Cayuga Lake and John discovered boating, fishing and golf. He and Mary loved to entertain family and friends either for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Over the years, they took in numerous dogs and cats that needed homes and this continued up to the time of John's death.In 1980, they moved to Florida so that John could pursue his passion of playing golf nearby every day and they eventually purchased a home near the 18th hole of Rolling Hills Country Club. Mary's passion was for birds and they had as many as 60 at one time. John was an avid stamp collector for many years, held a 32nd Masonic Degree being very active in the Ithaca Lodge and continued to be active in Florida, was a former treasurer of Ithaca City Club.Surviving are his children, William R. Slade of Binghamton, NY, Michael R. (Maria) Slade of Lansing, NY, Kathleen A. Smith of Ithaca; and stepdaughter, Lynn Hoskins (Rev. Barry) Brown of Stratford, CT; also his grandchildren, Sonia Slade of Boston, MA, and Meagan Smith of Ithaca; step grandchildren, Rev. Kenneth Ross (Amy) Brown of Walnut Creek, CA, and Jason Todd (Tara) Brown of Wallingford, CT. He had six step great-grandchildren. John is survived by a brother, William A. Slade of Altamont Springs, FL; and a brother-in-la, Horace E. (Shirley) Shackelton of Dryden, NY. John was predeceased by his wife and mother of his children, Mary Therese Colbert Slade; his wife, Mary E. Shackelton Slade of 45 years.At Mr. Slade's request, there were no services.1
