Obediah Judson Slade1
(1 December 1819 - 1 October 1886)
Obediah Judson Slade was born on December 1, 1819 in Massachusetts.2 He was the son of Obediah Slade and Sarah L. Lee.1 At the age of fourteen he was apprenticed to a carpenter and he served seven years and afterward became foreman of the firm for which he worked in Fall River. He came to Providence in 1846 and followed his trade there.2
Obediah married Hannah Thompson Monro, daughter of Jacob Monro and Hannah Thompson, on June 10, 1848.2 He assisted at the birth of the Republican party and supported the candidates and principles of that party as long as he lived. He was elected to the city council of Providence in 1860 and served from January 1, 1861, to 1869, when he resigned to accept the newly created office of superintendent of public buildings, for which his ability and experience admirably qualified him. He had charge of the building, repairing and equipment of the public schools. Notwithstanding his meagre schooling in early life, he was a student and scholar of some prominence. He was well read and an authority in the English poets from Shakespeare to the Victorian age. He was an able public speaker and took a prominent part in the debates of the city council and was in frequent demand as an after-dinner and campaign speaker.2 Obediah died on October 1, 1886 at age 66.3,2 He was buried in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island.3
