William Gilmer Lindsey Sr.

William Gilmer Lindsey Sr. was born on February 19, 1904 in Choctaw County, Alabama.1 William was the son of Janie Gilmer and Joe D. Lindsey. He attended the University of Alabama, receiving a B. A. degree, and then he attended the UA law school. After being admitted to the Alabama Bar, he practiced law in Butler until 1931, when he was appointed to serve as county solicitor of Washington County and moved to Chatom.1
William married Claudia Harrell Slade, daughter of James Bennett Slade II and Louise Pet Harrell, on August 31, 1934.1 He was elected as circuit judge in 1958. Judge William G. Lindsey served as judge of the First Judicial Circu it of Alabama, which is comprised of Choctaw, Clarke and Washington counties, from January 1, 1959 until January 10, 1977. Judge and Mrs. Lindsey and their family lived in Chatom for several years after their marriage, but later they moved to the old Slade house near McIntosh. William died on April 12, 1982 at age 781 and was buried in Hooks Cemetery, Washington County, Alabama.1

Amanda Urania Sanderson

Amanda Urania Sanderson was born on May 23, 1829 in Demopolis, Marengo County, Alabama.1 She was the daughter of Lemuel G. Sanderson and Jane Almahia Follin.1 Lemuel Sanders died when Amanda was about five. Jane's brother in law, Gorham Davenport, became the guardian for Amanda and her sister Cecile. He was also agent for Jane, who had become an invalid. Amanda attended Barton Institute in Mobile.1
Amanda married John H. Bosworth, son of Isabella Harrell Bosworth, on February 15, 1847.1 Amanda and John had four children together: Marcus and Isabel Cecelia Bosworth, twins born Feb 18, 1851, Isabel died July 24, 1852 - Hooks Cemetery; Thomas Lyle Bosworth, and Ida Bosworth. Around 1852, Amanda and her husband John along with her brother Lemuel, traveled to California for the gold rush. They rode donkeys across the isthmus of Panama, since there was no canal at that time, to reach the pacific coast. Then they traveled up the Pacific Coast to San Francisco.1
In 1865, after the civil war was over, Amanda and her children, Mark, Thomas and Ida, traveled to New York City. She may have been visiting her cousin Mariam Florence Follin ( Mrs. Frank Leslie) who lived in New York City. During that time, she received a telegram that her husband John Bosworth had died in California. She then traveled to Alabama, never to return to California.
Amanda's mother-in-law, Isabella Harrell Bosworth Slade had been married to James Bennett Slade for 37 years. They never had any children. Isabella's only son was John H. Bosworth from her first marriage. Isabella also died in 1865.1

Amanda died on May 24, 1891 in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, at age 62.1 She was buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile County, Alabama.1
