SOUTH LONDONDERRY -- Lewis Franklin Slade, 81, a lifelong resident of South Londonderry, died peacefully at his home on Monday morning, October 22, 2001,following a long illness.

He was born in Londonderry on Dec. 30, 1919, the son of the late Franklin and Beatrice (Carley) Slade. He received his education in local schools. Mr. Slade was taught blacksmithing and to be a farrier by his father. He was the third generation in his family to do so. He had also been logger, and worked in the construction trades, but because of a great love of horses, he returned to blacksmithing and farriering throughout southern Vermont for many years.

Mr. Slade served in the Army Infantry during World War II, in both the European Theatre and Africa. He was awarded the Bronze Star and other medals. Following the war he returned to South Londonderry. On May 4, 1949, he married Angeline Hodgin in Peru. Mrs. Slade survives.

He was a member of the South Londonderry Baptist Church, the American Legion Post in Londonderry, the Oddfellows Club in South Londonderry and the Champion Fire Company #5 of South Londonderry. He served as a town constable and as a lister and compiled over 35 years of service to his community. Mr. Slade was an avid outdoorsman, and a very devoted family man.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Gloria Wilkins of South Londonderry, Eileen "Midge" Kimball of Kissimee, Fla., and Karen Renn of Sharon; a son, Terrance Slade of South Londonderry, and a son from a previous marriage, Henry Slade of Vernon; a sister-in-law, Muriel Ingram of Rutland; a niece, Patricia Slade; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, along with numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, who died in 1975, by a brother, Harry Slade, who died in 1938, and by a nephew, Kenneth Slade, who died in 1999.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 25, at 2 p.m. at the South Londonderry Baptist Church, with the Rev. Malcolm Hamblett officiating. A eulogy will be offered by Kermit Riley. Interment will follow the church service, and a time of refreshment will follow the committal.

Friends may call at the Brewster Funeral Service, 34 Park Place, Manchester Center, on Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m.

Memorials in his honor may be made to the Vermont Visiting Nurse Alliance, in care of the Brewster Funeral Service, P.0. Box 885, Manchester Center, Vt. 05255
