Martha Ann Storey

(25 December 1858 - 16 May 1931)
Martha Ann Storey was born on December 25, 1858 in Lee County, Alabama.1 She was the daughter of Enoch M Storey and Mary Elizabeth Hagan.1
Martha Ann Storey married Samuel Simon Slade, son of Simon Slade and Holland Barrett, circa 1878.2 1880 census excerp.3 Census excerp. Martha died on May 2, 1930 in Pike County, Georgia, at age 71.4 Her obituary in the Shreveport News Star World read:

The Spirit of Mrs. Martha Ann Slade known as "Miss Matt" or "Granny" answered gods last call and entered eternity. Rev. Bailey conducted the funeral services which was a fitting tribute to her gentle and well known character. Service was held at Fincher Methodist church and then the body was carried to the cemetery nearby where she was laid near her husband and son. She loved spring and it seemed fitting that she should have found her last rest in the beauty of a spring day. The numerous floral offerings expressed in a small way the love her family and many friends bore for her. Her own loved ones as well as everyone in the community rise up and call her blessed. The feeling is that Meansville has lost one of its truest and noblest Christian women, one who lived her life trustworthily, obediently, helpful and earnestly and courageously. In her home her labor was of love making joyful sacrifices for everyone's sake and in her community making all around her Feel that in her each had a sister, friend and neighbor. She was born in Alabama a daughter of Elizabeth and Enoch Story and moved when an infant to this community where she has lived since. She joined Fincher Methodist church at an early age and has been a Loyal and devoted Christian. She was married at the age of 20 to Samuel S. Slade and to this union was born 10 children, all of whom survive her but one son E. Marvin and an Infant. Those surviving are: C.S.: J.S.: J.G.: C.T.: Mrs. W. F. Reeves: Mrs. J. H. Cannifax: Miss Lucy Slade and Miss Claude Slade. Her husband has been dead for several years only one sister Mrs. Nancy Slade survives her. We have priceless heritage in the memory of her noble Christ like life and character. Our sorrows is tempered with the sweet consciousness that her life was lived for her savior and for others. For such a Life there is no end.5
