Cunningham Township Supervisor Arthur R. Slade Sr., 64, a veteran of more than 40 years in Champaign County Democratic politics, died at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 4, 1975) at his home at 806 E. Park St., U.
Mr. Slade was elected supervisor by 91 votes in 1971 over Republican Raymond Roughton, a 30-year member of the township board.
A construction contractor by trade, Mr. Slade was proud of being born and raised in Urbana's First Ward. After twice loosing close races, he was finally elected First Ward Alderman in 1961.
An advocate of a strong Democratic Party in the country, he pushed for reforms in the central committee bylaws in 1968 and backed the current county committee chairman, Harry Tiebout.
He served as vice chairman of the Urbana Democratic organization from 1962 to 1964 and as chairman from 1964 to 1966. He was also elected Cunningham Township committee chairman in 1964.
Mr. Slade was instrumental in providing grounds and construction of a pavilion at the party's picnic grounds near Mayview in 1966.
Funeral services for Mr. Slade will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Renner-Wikoff Funeral Chapel. Rev. Iva F. Slade will officiate. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel.
He was born April 10, 1910 in Urbana. Ill., a son of William and Minnie McGraw Slade. He married Ruby B. Smalley, April 10, 1927, in Urbana. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Marshky, and Mrs. Naomi Hawn; and a son, Arthur R. Slade, Jr., all of Urbana; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grand children; two sisters, Mrs. Elsy Marshky, Champaign, and Mrs. Genevieve May, Urbana; and two brothers, Rube, Indianapolis, Ind., and Albert, Urbana.

He was 19 yrs old, 5' 5" tall, grey eyes, brown hair and fair complection. He stated he was born in New Market. He served in Co. B of the 7th Calvary Regiment, and was discharged April 4, 1867.4 Abraham Slade was a railroad conductor.5
