Alma DiVenuti1,2

     Alma DiVenuti was born on April 11, 1932 in Everett, Middlesex County, Massachusetts,2, the daughter of Biagio and Berenice Marks DiVenuti.2 Alma's father was an economist, with the rank of diplomat, and so, she lived abroad with her family in Rome, Paris, and Puerto Rico. Her family finally settled in Arlington, VA, where she attended Marymount College.2
     Alma married Joseph A. Slade II, son of Joseph Ernest Slade and Dorothy A. Weaver, in 1951.1,2 Alma died on November 1, 2018 at age 86.2 Her obituary read as follows:

      Alma Slade, 86, died Thursday, November 1st. Alma was born in Everett, MA on April 11, 1932. Alma's father was an economist, with the rank of diplomat, and so, she lived abroad with her family in Rome, Paris, and Puerto Rico. 1951 she married Joseph A. Slade and a short time later moved to Bridgeport, CT where she raised her family and later developed a career in textiles and design.
As a young mother, she sewed drapes at home for the business known as The Barn. In 1978 Alma bought The Barn from the original owner Milton Lieff. She had a considerable talent for business and quickly developed it into a well-known textile and design center. Her store advertised in The New York Times, Architectural Digest and Yankee Magazine. People came from all over the eastern U.S. seeking her beautiful fabrics and stunning design vision. Admiring articles were written about her.
A woman of many interests, Alma was passionate about reading, gardening, art, design, cooking, travel, and, of course, her family. She will be lovingly remembered not only by family, friends and customers, but also by the many individuals who she so generously helped.
She is predeceased by her father Biagio DiVenuti, mother Berenice Marks DiVenuti, and son Dr. Joseph F. Slade, III. She is survived by daughters Carol Slade and Veronica "Ronnie" Slade [wife The Honorable Lisa C. Schultz], sister Susan Eberhard [husband John Eberhard], grandsons Joseph Slade, IV [wife Kimberly Pacho-Slade] and Andy Slade [wife Alexa Krueger], and great granddaughter Charlotte Rose Pacho-Slade.
A memorial mass will be held Saturday, November 10 at 1 p.m. at St. George Catholic Church, 33 Whitfield St., Guilford, CT.

Dr. Joseph F. Slade III1

     Dr. Joseph F. Slade III was born on January 4, 1953 in Washington, District of Columbia.1 He was the son of Joseph A. Slade II and Alma DiVenuti.1 Joseph joined the Yale full-time faculty in July 1993 following his distinguished educational training at Columbia University, BA, University of Connecticut School of Medicine, MD, Duke University (Orthopedic Surgery Residency) and the University Miami / Jackson Memorial Medical Center (Residency and fellowship in Hand and Reconstructive Surgery).

Dr. Slade then served his country in US Air Force during Desert Storm.1 Joseph died on May 21, 2010 at age 57.1 His obituary read as follows:

      Dr. Joseph F.Slade III, MD of Guilford. Loving fiancé of Kathleen. Joseph was born Jan 4, 1953, in Washington, DC, son of Alma Slade of Stratford and Joseph A. Slade II and his companion Rose Goldstein of Milford. Father of Joseph Slade IV and his wife Kimberly of VA and Andrew Slade of VA. Brother of Carol Rebecca Slade of ME and Veronica Ann Slade of NM and he was a soon to be grandfather of Charlotte Rose Slade. Joseph was Professor of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation (with a joint appointment in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) at Yale University School of Medicine and Director of the Hand and Upper Extremity Service. He joined the Yale full-time faculty in July 1993 following his distinguished educational training at Columbia University, BA, University of Connecticut School of Medicine, MD, Duke University (Orthopedic Surgery Residency) and the University Miami / Jackson Memorial Medical Center (Residency and fellowship in Hand and Reconstructive Surgery).

Dr. Slade then served his country in US Air Force during Desert Storm. During his professional career, Dr. Slade made many contributions to clinical care including the development of new approaches to treatment of hand and wrist fractures, teaching at Yale and lecturing around the world, along with scholarly research. He also authored numerous scientific articles.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. George Church, 33 Whitfield St, Guilford on Monday, May 24 at 11:30am. Burial with military honors will follow Mass in Westside Cemetery, Three Mile Course, Guilford. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dr. Slade's memory may be made to the Joseph Slade III, MD Memorial Fund, c/ o Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, Yale University, PO Box 208071, New Haven, CT 06520.
