     Benjamin M. Slade was born in July, 1856 in Harford County, Maryland.^2,3,4 He was the son of Benjamin A. Slade and Catherine Boyle.⁵ Benjamin M. Slade was New Tag in 1857 in Maryland.^4,3
     Benjamin married Clara A. Preston, daughter of Joseph B. Preston and Malessa Trump, circa 1888.² Benjamin died on November 16, 1927 in Chippewa, Michigan, at age 71.⁶ He was buried in Fulton Street Cemetery, Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan.⁷

     George W. Slade was born in 1860 in Harford County, Maryland.^2,1 He was the son of Benjamin A. Slade and Catherine Boyle.¹ George died in 1933.³ He was buried in Saint Ignatius Cemetery, Hickory, Harford County, Maryland.³

     Mary Rebecca Martin was born in January, 1863 in Maryland.^2,1
     Mary married Walter Randolph Slade, son of Benjamin A. Slade and Catherine Boyle, in 1882 in Harford County, Maryland.^2,1 They have been married 18 years, Rebecca is the mother of ten, eight are living.³ Mary died in 1947.⁴ She was buried in Saint Ignatius Cemetery, Hickory, Harford County, Maryland.⁴

     Martin Alphonsus Slade Sr. was born on November 26, 1885 in Harford County, Maryland.^2,3 He was the son of Walter Randolph Slade and Mary Rebecca Martin.^4,3
     Martin married first Bertha C. Mechem, daughter of Isaac Mechem and Cassandra [?].⁵ Martin Alphonsus Slade Sr. registered for WWI draft on April 12, 1918 at Forrest Hills, Harford County, Maryland.⁵ Bertha died Jan 11, 1918. In 1920 census, both Martin and his infant son were living with his parents and he is listed as a widower. The boy was not living with him in 1930 census.⁶
     Martin married second Marie J. Timmins, daughter of Vincent J. Timmins and Margaret Rosa Sneeringer, on December 24, 1930 in Adams County, Pennsylvania.⁷ Martin Alphonsus Slade Sr. was registered for World War 2 draft in 1942 while living in Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania.⁵ Martin died on March 26, 1957 at age 71³ and was buried in Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cemetery, McSherrystown, Adams County, Pennsylvania.⁸

     Walter B. Slade was born in August, 1888 in Harford County, Maryland.^2,1 He was the son of Walter Randolph Slade and Mary Rebecca Martin.¹ Walter died on May 3, 1948 at age 59³ and was buried in Saint Ignatius Cemetery, Hickory, Harford County, Maryland.⁴

     Frances M. Slade was born in May, 1892 in Harford County, Maryland.^2,1 She was the daughter of Walter Randolph Slade and Mary Rebecca Martin.¹
     Frances married Dr. John Edward Tyler.³

     Joseph Ernest Slade was born on August 1, 1893 in Forest Hill, Harford County, Maryland.^2,3 He was the son of Walter Randolph Slade and Mary Rebecca Martin.⁴ Joseph Ernest Slade registered for WWI draft on June 5, 1917 at Harford County, Maryland.³
     Joseph married Dorothy A. Weaver, daughter of William F. Weaver and Mary Altoff.⁵
     Joseph Ernest Slade registered for the draft for World War II in 1942, while living at Allentown, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, residing at 2735 Greenleaf Street.¹ Joseph died on September 11, 1972 at age 79.^6,7 He was buried in Saint Frances Xavier Cemetery, Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania.⁷

     Edward Lochary Slade was born in April, 1895 in Harford County, Maryland.^3,1 He was the son of Walter Randolph Slade and Mary Rebecca Martin.¹ Edward Lochary Slade registered for WWI draft on June 5, 1917 at Maryland.⁴
     Edward married Katie L. Amrein.⁵ Edward Lochary Slade was registered for World War 2 draft on April 27, 1942 while living in Maryland.⁶ Edward died in 1954⁷ and was buried in Saint Ignatius Cemetery, Hickory, Harford County, Maryland.⁷

     Arthur C. Slade was New Tag in January, 1898 in Harford County, Maryland.² He was born on January 23, 1899 in Maryland.³ He was the son of Walter Randolph Slade and Mary Rebecca Martin.¹ He was a priest at St. Ignatius Church in Hickory, Harford County, Maryland.⁴ Arthur died on November 12, 1971 at age 72³ and was buried in Saint Ignatius Cemetery, Hickory, Harford County, Maryland.³

     Stephen Chester Slade was known as Chester. He was born on July 23, 1903 in Harford County, Maryland.² He was the son of Walter Randolph Slade and Mary Rebecca Martin.³
     Stephen married Catherine C. Wolfhope, daughter of Francis Alphonsus Wolfhope and Anastasia Regina Cordial, circa 1926.⁴ Stephen died on May 8, 1986 at age 82.² He was buried in Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia.²

     Martin Alphonsus Slade Jr. was born in October, 1917 in Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland.^2,1 He was the son of Martin Alphonsus Slade Sr. and Bertha C. Mechem.^1,3
     Martin married second Rita Marie Smith, daughter of Francis Leo Smith and Marie Regina Hurley.⁴ Martin died in April, 1976 at age 58.^5,1

     Rita Marie Smith was born on September 9, 1917 in Natrona, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.² She was the daughter of Francis Leo Smith and Marie Regina Hurley.²
     Rita married Martin Alphonsus Slade Jr., son of Martin Alphonsus Slade Sr. and Bertha C. Mechem.² Rita died on May 25, 2010 at age 92.² She was buried in Oak Hill Burial Park, Polk County, Florida.² Her obituary read as follows:

      SLADE Rita Marie Smith Slade, oldest child of Francis Leo Smith and Marie Regina Hurley Smith, was born on September 9, 1917, in Natrona, PA. She was valedictorian of the Natrona, PA high school class of 1935, and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Mathematics in 1939. During college, she was an active member of Theta Phi Alpha sorority. She spent most of her life in Lakeland, Florida as a loving wife, dedicated mother, and beloved grandmother. She moved to Jacksonville, Florida in 2005 to live nearer to family. Rita is survived by her children Dr. Martin A. Slade, III, Pasadena, CA; Patricia Slade Connor, Jacksonville, FL; Dr. Barbara Ann Slade, Atlanta, GA; and John Francis Slade (Doris Clyde Slade, spouse), Lewisberry, PA, and grandchildren Christopher Ryan Connor; Benjamin Martin Slade, Lindsay Anne Connor O'Brien (Michael Francis O'Brien, spouse), Shaun Daniel Slade, and Peter Cory Slade. She was predeceased by her husband, Martin A. Slade, Jr., in 1976, as well as siblings Margaret Ann Smith and Francis Leo Smith, Jr. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 10:00 a.m., at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Lakeland, Florida with interment at Oak Hill Burial Park.

     Abisha Slade was born on September 15, 1799 in Caswell County, North Carolina.^2,1 He was the son of Ezekiel Slade and Mary Hubbard.¹
     Abisha married first Mary K. Harrison, daughter of Thomas Harrison Jr. and Mildred Johnston, on January 5, 1826 in North Carolina.³ Abisha was a tobacco farmer. In 1839, his slave, Stephen, fell asleep in the curing house and let the fire nearly go out. Because it was raining, all the wood was wet. Rather than throw a wet log on the fire, Stephen, ran to the charcoal pit in the blacksmith shop, grabbed some charred bits of wood and threw them on the embers. The sudden increase in heat turned the green tobacco leaves yellow. The yellow tobacco tasted sweeter when smoked and did not have as much of an unpleasant odor. Abisha was able to sell the yellow tobacco or "Bright Leaf Tobacco" for four times the normal price of tobacco. He and Stephen became part of the history of North Carolina's billion-dollar agricultural economy.⁴ Abisha served as Clerk of Court in Caswell County from 1841 to 1854. He built a brick house in Yanceyville, NC and at one time had many servants. Left penniless after the Civil War, foreclosure on his house was mericfully postponed until after his death in 1869. The house has since been demolished, the site is now a parking lot for a funeral home.³
     Abisha married second Mary Graves, daughter of William Graves and Ann Lea Graves, on April 23, 1846 in North Carolina.³
     Abisha married third Sarah Lucinda Taylor, daughter of State Senator Paul Taylor and Betsy Williams Terry, on March 10, 1853 in North Carolina.⁵ Abisha died in 1869.^2,1 The Milton Chronicle disputes the origin of Bright Leaf Tobacco. The Chronicle had been " informed by an old citizen of Caswell that it was William Slade, Captain Abisha Slade's brothers" who discovered curing by charcoal. Mr. Slade did it entirely by accident. He cleaned out a patch and planted some tobacco and worked it in his spare time. When it was housed and ready to cure he realized he'd forgotten to get wood for the fire. He went to the blacksmith shop and got some coal. His tobacco turned bright yellow and he thought it was ruined. Turned out the market loved it and he stuck to curing with coal.⁶

     Elizabeth J Slade was born on December 15, 1804 in Caswell County, North Carolina.² She was the daughter of Ezekiel Slade and Mary Hubbard.¹ Elizabeth died circa 1880.²
