Vertner L. Slade, founder and operator of Slade & Collins Insurance Agency and a former potentate of the Oleika Temple, died Saturday after a long illness. He was 88.
Slade, formerly of Chenault Road, operated the insurance agency for more than 52 years. He was described by his secretary of 35 years, Harriott Shepherd, as "a very nice person to work for - one of the greatest guys to work for there ever was." She also called him "Colonel Slade." He was a Kentucky Colonel, and the title fit him well, she said. "He was a gentleman. He tipped his hat or took it off," she said.
Slade also was the founder and the first president of the Kentucky Association of Mutual Insurance Agents. He helped found and headed the insurance school at Eastern Kentucky University.
In 1967 he was named Mr. Mutual Agent. In 1968, he was elected potentate of the Oleika Temple.
He was also a member emeritus of the board of governors for the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Lexington, where for more than 13 years he was the chairman of the program to help poor children attending the annual Oleika Shrine Circus.
He was also one of the founders of the Stop Over House in Lexington for World War II soldiers. The halfway house provided tours all over the area and served a Sunday lunch for 25 cents. "He was proud of the house and to have worked with it," Mrs. Shepherd said. He was also a member in the Civil War Round Table, Lexington Lodge No.1, Washington Council No. 1, Webb Consistory of Kentucky Scottish Rite, the Legion of Honor and the Royal Order of Jesters.
He was a past president of the Fayette Lions Club, a past post commander of the Man o' War post of the American Legion and a naval veteran of World War I. He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Goodrich Slade of Lexington; a daughter, Mrs. Henry Avent of Bennetsville, S.C; three grandsons; and two great- grandsons.4
