Kay Una Slade1

Kay Una Slade was born on February 28, 1939 in Stafford County, Kansas.2 She was the daughter of Boyd LeClair Slade and Mary Katherine Elliott.1 Kay Una Slade resided in Oxnard, California, in 1987.1 Kay died on February 6, 2015 in Ventura County, California, at age 75.2 Her obituary read as follows:

Although you may have known her as an exceptionally fine local artist, Kay Slade actually had deep roots in many areas. Her earliest years were in Kansas, born February 28, 1939 on a third-generation family farm in Stafford County to parents Boyd and Mary Slade. After earning a B.S. degree from Kansas State University in 1961, she visited her sister in California where she lived out most of her life.

Professionally, Kay began her career in elementary teaching. She taught K-3 in Torrance, Edwards Air Force Base, Woodside, and Oxnard. She used her creative skills beginning in 1975 as a graphics designer.

In the early 1980s, Kay traveled and even spent nine months cruising around the South Pacific islands. In 1982, she returned to substitute teaching for the Oxnard School District. During this time, Kay reinvented her artistic talents by becoming the artist most of us remember her as - a decorative painter and muralist. She created many residential faux finishes and wall textures like the five examples at the Ventura County Symphony League's Design Houses. Kay completed commercial murals for clients such as Camarillo State Hospital and O-sabi Japanese restaurant in Ventura.

After a long illness, Kay passed away nearing her 76th birthday, on February 6th. She is preceded in death by a brother, Boyd Slade of Austin, Texas. She is survived by her son, Barry Vinieratos of Oxnard; sisters Lou Webb of Port Hueneme, CA, Karen Schifferdecker of Winfield, Kansas, and Jolene Montgomery of Olathe, Kansas; brothers Clair Slade of Morrison, Colorado and Ronnie Slade of Ventura.

Kay's ashes will be scattered at sea to honor her love of the beach. A celebration of her life will take place on February 28th. Call Lou Webb at 805-985-5191 for more information.
