After completion of a concentrated course at the Liberty Mutual Insurance Company's home office in Boston, Mass. she returned to Utica and opened a Liberty Mutual Branch Office as one of the first and youngest woman in New York State to become a licensed agent and broker. Upon returning to Syracuse in 1944, she became Assistant Secretary and Manager of the insurance division at Eagan Real Estate until 1960. She also was a Manager for the Caryl and Murray Insurance Agency and in 1965 joined the Agway Insurance Companies where she was elected Corporate Secretary in 1971.3 Mary died on April 25, 20033 and was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Dewitt, Onondaga County, New York.3 Her obituary read as follows:
Mary Gertrude Slade, 84, of 1700 West Onondaga St. died Friday at Community General Hospital. Miss Slade was born in Syracuse, but moved with her family to Utica before she was a year old. Her other activities included Account Executive for the United Way of Central New York from 1978 to 1980, Member of National Secretary Association, Honorary Member of of the Syracuse Insurance Women's Association, Member of Phi Mu Alumnae College Fraternity, Onondaga Hill Senior Center, American Heart Association, National Arthritis Foundation and AARP. For several years, she also conducted the women's duplicate bridge at the Bellevue Country Club where she was a member for over 50 years.
She is survived by two brothers, Herbert T. Slade of Camillus and Robert A. Slade of Syracuse; a sister, Jean M. Smith of West Hartford, Conn; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Funeral Services will be at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at Whelan Bros. Funeral Home and 11 a.m. in St. Michael's Church. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Dewitt. Friends may call Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at 3700 West Genesee St.3

Jean M. (Slade) Smith June 20, 2019 Jean M. Smith of West Hartford, beloved wife of the late Kendall Smith, died on June 20th at John Dempsey Hospital. She was a professional actress and director. Born in Utica, NY to the late
Herbert F. and Marie M. Slade, she began performing on WIBX radio at the age of 11. She was a graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes Grammar School and Utica Free Academy. Jean was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Syracuse University, taught at Endicott Junior College in Beverly, MA and worked at WJTN in Jamestown, NY before joining WHEN- TV in Syracuse as the first woman telecaster in the area. She also directed and produced the station's programs for children. It was at WHEN where she met her beloved future husband Kendall, who predeceased her in 1999. In 1958, they moved to West Hartford where she performed with many theater groups including The Mark Twain Masquers, The Producing Guild, The Hartford Stage Company and Company One. Mrs. Smith assisted for many years as director of drama for the Conard High School musicals. Jean wrote and performed many one- woman shows (assisted by Gary Waite) and was active in performing on video and audiotapes. Her memberships in the St. Joseph's Mothers Circle, Alpha Xi Delta, St. Helena's Women's Guild and her book and movie clubs brought her friendship and joy. Jean leaves her six beloved children: Mark and his wife Bari of Marlton, NJ, Joel and his wife Liz of West Hartford, Joanne D'Eugenio of Fairfax, VA, Gregory of Westborough, MA, Brian Smith and Belkis Fernandez of Paris, FR, and Paul and his wife Erin of Brooklyn, NY; eight grandchildren: Justin Smith and his wife Dani of Brooklyn, NY, Matthew Smith and Nicole Smith of Chaplin, Katie Ginn and her husband Ben of Wichita, KA, Annemarie Smith and her fiance Joey Saponaro of Glastonbury, Brendan Smith of West Hartford, William D'Eugenio of Silver Springs, MD, Emily D'Eugenio of Fairfax, VA; her great granddaughter Ellie Ginn of Wichita, her special friend Dottie Matsikas and many nieces, nephews and friends. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her brother Herbert Slade and his wife Vi of Camillus, NY; her brother Robert Slade, her sister-in-law Joan Slade and her sister Mary Gertrude Slade, all of Syracuse, and her daughter-in-law Debra Smith of Columbia, CT. Jean's family is very thankful to her dedicated caregiver, Patricia Cokes, to Cynthia Ebanks and the wonderful staff from New England Nightingales, to all the caring angels at The McAuley, and to the doctors and nurses at UCONN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Claver Church, 47 Pleasant St., West Hartford on Tuesday, June 25 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday, June 24th from 4 to 7 pm at the Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave., West Hartford. Jean M. (Slade) Smith June 20, 2019 Jean M. Smith of West Hartford, beloved wife of the late Kendall Smith, died on June 20th at John Dempsey Hospital. She was a professional actress and director. Born in Utica, NY to the late
Herbert F. and Marie M. Slade, she began performing on WIBX radio at the age of 11. She was a graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes Grammar School and Utica Free Academy. Jean was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Syracuse University, taught at Endicott Junior College in Beverly, MA and worked at WJTN in Jamestown, NY before joining WHEN- TV in Syracuse as the first woman telecaster in the area. She also directed and produced the station's programs for children. It was at WHEN where she met her beloved future husband Kendall, who predeceased her in 1999. In 1958, they moved to West Hartford where she performed with many theater groups including The Mark Twain Masquers, The Producing Guild, The Hartford Stage Company and Company One. Mrs. Smith assisted for many years as director of drama for the Conard High School musicals. Jean wrote and performed many one- woman shows (assisted by Gary Waite) and was active in performing on video and audiotapes. Her memberships in the St. Joseph's Mothers Circle, Alpha Xi Delta, St. Helena's Women's Guild and her book and movie clubs brought her friendship and joy. Jean leaves her six beloved children: Mark and his wife Bari of Marlton, NJ, Joel and his wife Liz of West Hartford, Joanne D'Eugenio of Fairfax, VA, Gregory of Westborough, MA, Brian Smith and Belkis Fernandez of Paris, FR, and Paul and his wife Erin of Brooklyn, NY; eight grandchildren: Justin Smith and his wife Dani of Brooklyn, NY, Matthew Smith and Nicole Smith of Chaplin, Katie Ginn and her husband Ben of Wichita, KA, Annemarie Smith and her fiance Joey Saponaro of Glastonbury, Brendan Smith of West Hartford, William D'Eugenio of Silver Springs, MD, Emily D'Eugenio of Fairfax, VA; her great granddaughter Ellie Ginn of Wichita, her special friend Dottie Matsikas and many nieces, nephews and friends. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her brother Herbert Slade and his wife Vi of Camillus, NY; her brother Robert Slade, her sister-in-law Joan Slade and her sister Mary Gertrude Slade, all of Syracuse, and her daughter-in-law Debra Smith of Columbia, CT. Jean's family is very thankful to her dedicated caregiver, Patricia Cokes, to Cynthia Ebanks and the wonderful staff from New England Nightingales, to all the caring angels at The McAuley, and to the doctors and nurses at UCONN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Claver Church, 47 Pleasant St., West Hartford on Tuesday, June 25 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday, June 24th from 4 to 7 pm at the Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave., West Hartford. Robert Ambrose Slade, age 88, died peacefully in his sleep, on Saturday, March 4, 2017. He was the loving son of Herbert and Marie Slade and lived most of his life in Syracuse, after moving from Utica, NY as a child. Bob graduated from Central High School in 1947 and attended LeMoyne College. Bob worked in insurance most of his career as a claims supervisor, and was employed by several companies including, Utica Mutual, American Mutual, eventually retiring from Wausau Insurance. He has been married to Jane Cubito, his loving companion since 1990.Bob was a great father and very involved in his two-son's upbringing, including being a little league coach and Boy Scout leader for many years. Bob loved to golf, hunt, paint and do woodcrafts. He was a big Al Jolson fan and loved to sing his hits on a regular basis. Early in his career he was a toastmaster, participating in many public speaking competitions.Bob was predeceased by his brother, Bert Slade and sister, Mary Gertrude.Bob is survived by his loving wife, Jane, his sister, Jean Smith and sons, Robert T. Viola "Vi" Slade, 97, of Camillus, passed away Monday at Upstate University Hospital at Community General. Born in Syracuse, she lived in Camillus since 1956. A graduate of Vocational High, Vi was employed for 11 years with Excelsior Insurance Co. and formerly with Bradley & Williams Electrical Contractors. She was a former communicant of Holy Family Church and volunteered with Meals-on-Wheels.
Vi was predeceased by her husband, Herbert, in 2006; and brothers, Edward and Bartholomew Sullivan.
Surviving are her daughter, Susan (Jim) Edmonds of Liverpool; sons, Dr. Herbert (Pam) Slade of Fort Worth, TX, William (Christy) Slade, Esq. of McLean, VA and Christopher (Jan) Slade of West Rutland, VT; brother, Robert W. Sullivan of Syracuse; grandchildren, Jessica, Dr. David (Dr. Jamie), Thomas, Kathryn and Camillus T. Slade; and great-grandson, Louis.
It was Vi's wish to donate her body to science. There will be no calling hours.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, November 3, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church. Burial will be private in St. Mary's Cemetery, DeWitt.1
