     Helen Slade was born on November 16, 1857 in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia.1 She was the daughter of James Bog Slade and Mary Elizabeth Denson. Helen Slade was New Tag in 1859 in Columbus, Georgia.2
     Helen married Robert Edward Farish in 1882.3 Helen died on February 4, 1934 at age 761 and was buried in Linwood Historic Cemetery, Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia.1

     Penelope Bog Slade went by Nellie.1 She was born on May 26, 1869 in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia.2 She was the daughter of James Bog Slade and Mary Elizabeth Denson.

Mason Lee Wiggins

     Mason Lee Wiggins was born on January 22, 1798 in Bertie County, North Carolina. He was the son of Blake Baker Wiggins and Sallie Lee.1
     Mason married Elizabeth Slade, daughter of General Jeremiah Slade and Janet Bog, on May 2, 1826 in North Carolina. Mason died on July 21, 1880 in Halifax County, North Carolina, at age 82 and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Halifax County, North Carolina.2

Thomas Bog Slade Jr.

(29 January 1891 - 17 October 1956)
     Thomas Bog Slade Jr. was born on January 29, 1891 in Martin County, North Carolina.1,2 He was the son of Thomas Bog Slade and Mary Whitmel Griffin. His mother died when he was very young and he was raised by his two unmarried aunts, Elizabeth and Fanny Penelope Slade, at the Marsh Point plantation. He attended and graduated from the University of North Carolina with a degree in electrical engineering. He was a prominent businessman in the Hamilton area.
     Thomas married Mary Pender Gladstone.3 She was the daughter of Margaret Burton Ward and William Edward Gladstone.3 Thomas died on October 17, 1956 at age 65.1,2 He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Williamston, Martin County, North Carolina.2

Mary Ward Slade

(22 September 1923 - 14 October 2017)
     Mary Ward Slade was born on September 22, 1923 in Richmond City, Virginia.1 She was the daughter of Thomas Bog Slade Jr. and Mary Pender Gladstone.
     Mary married John William Purvis Jr. on August 21, 1946 in Martin County, North Carolina.2 Mary died on October 14, 2017 in Rocky Mount, Nash County, North Carolina, at age 94.1 Her obituary read as follows:

      Mary Slade Purvis, age 94, joined her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, October 14, 2017. Born in Richmond, VA on September 22, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Bog Slade, Jr. and Mary Pender Slade. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John William Purvis, Jr; brothers, Thomas Bog Slade, III and Richard Slade; and the many pets she loved dearly throughout her lifetime.

Mary was a graduate of the Woman's College, University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Upon graduation she taught business courses at Rocky Mount Senior High School and over the years, enjoyed reconnecting with her students in many ways. Mary was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church, attending Christ Church for many years and more recently St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Mary spread her message of love throughout her life and throughout her many circles of friends in her church, her neighborhoods, Cursillo community, water aerobics, senior citizen activities and for almost six years among the staff, residents and their families at Autumn Care of Nash.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory, son, John W. Purvis III and wife, Pam, of Rhode Island; and daughter, Katherine Bog Wilder and husband, Larry, of Rocky Mount. She is also survived by grandchildren, Kaitlin Slade Wilder, Matthew Bog Wilder and wife, Brittany; great-granddaughter, Caroline Reese Wilder; brother-in-law, Bill Purvis; nieces, Penny Slade, Thomasine Slade Wilson, Candy Perry; and nephew, Joe Purvis.

A Celebration of New Life will be held on Friday, December 8, 2017 at 11:00 AM at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 301 S. Circle Drive, Rocky Mount with the Father George Greer officiating.

Visitation with the family will by held on Thursday, December 7, 2017 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the Commons Area of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and immediately following the 11:00 AM Friday service.

Mary's family is deeply grateful to the staff of Autumn Care and the other residents and their families who loved and cared for "Miss Mary" during the last years of her life. The family extends their gratitude to her special caregivers Nat, Flo, Gwen, Ida, and Danielle for the love and laughter they shared with Miss Mary.

Richard Gladstone Slade

(18 September 1918 - 9 December 1979)
     Richard Gladstone Slade was born on September 18, 1918 in Martin County, North Carolina.1 He was the son of Thomas Bog Slade Jr. and Mary Pender Gladstone. He attended the Citadel in Charleston, SC and the University of NC at Chapel Hill. He entered the armed forces and served in the US Army Engineers in the Pacific theater. After the war, he managed the family farm which he inherited after his father's death in 1956.2
     Richard married Mamie Clyde Taylor on November 30, 1946.1 She was the daughter of Mamie Green and William Joseph Taylor.3 Richard died on December 9, 1979 in North Carolina at age 611 and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Williamston, Martin County, North Carolina.4
