     William married Mary Elizabeth Slade, daughter of John Sublette Slade Jr. and Sarah Frances Stigall.3 William died on April 7, 1944 at age 68 and was buried in City Cemetery, Wellington, Lafayette County, Missouri.2

Joe Toby Slade1

(2 September 1932 - )
     Joe Toby Slade commonly called Toby.1 He was born on September 2, 1932 in Wayne County, West Virginia.1 He was the son of Rufus John Slade and Aquila Williamson.
     Joe married Ruby Lyons.1 She was the daughter of Jesse and Myrtle Browning Lyons.2 Joe died on October 7, 2010 in Chapman, Logan County, West Virginia, at age 78.1 He was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Pecks Mill, Logan County, West Virginia.1 His obituary read as follows:

      CHAPMANVILLE, W.Va. — Joe “Toby” Slade, 78, of Garretts Fork of Chapmanville, passed away Thursday, October 7, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family while under the care of Dignity Hospice.

Born September 2, 1932, in Wayne County, he was a son of the late Rufus and Aquila Williamson Slade. Also preceding him in death was his wife of 55 years, Ruby Lyons Slade, on June 4, 2010; three sisters, Mary Milam, Genett Damron and Floretta Slade, and three brothers, Odell, Gaylord and Johnny Slade.

Joe served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a retired coal miner. He was a member of the UMWA and the American Legion. He loved his family, farming and the outdoors. Before his illness he could be found working in his garden or tending to his cattle and chickens.

Survivors include three children, Shelia Robinette, Deborah Collins, and Michael Slade, all of Chapmanville; daughter-in-law, Beverly Kay Slade; two sons-in-law, Joseph “Bud” Robinette and Larry Collins; six grandchildren, Kara Robinette Wiley and her husband, Timmy, of Huntington, and Sidney, Samantha and Sara Slade and Brandon and Justin Collins, all of Chapmanville; two sisters, Bonnie Milam of Fredericksburg, Va., and Rosella Collins of Charleston, S.C., and two sisters-in-law, Shirley Mundy of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Opal Burgess of Charleston.

Services will be held at noon Monday, October 11, at the Freeman Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Freeman Funeral Home of Chapmanville is in charge of the arrangements.

Jim Grimison Slade1,2

(28 March 1894 - 10 November 1955)
     Jim Grimison Slade was born on March 28, 1894 in Colchester County, Nova Scotia, Canada.3 He was the son of George Slade and Mary Jane Smith.1 Jim Grimison Slade was known as Lawrence transcribed as in 1911 census.4 A neighbor had "a little dog named Peggy. Unfortunately, Peggy was out in the hay field when it was being mowed. The cutter bar hit her and she lost a leg. Jim gathered up Peggy and took her home to nurse her. Now one thought she would live. Peggy survived the ordeal and spent the rest of her three-legged days with Jim. Jim, lke his brother Will Dunc, was a bachelor and I am sure Peggy was great company for him."5 Jim died on November 10, 1955 in Springhill, Cumberland, Nova Scotia, at age 61.6 His obituary read as follows:

      "Mr. Slade was a man of amiable disposition and gifted with a keen sense of humour. Although not active in fraternal societies, he was noted for his interest in his fellow men and his devotion to his family. At the time of his passing the deceased was serving as county councilor for District 22, Colchester County and was to contest his seat in the election on October 18. Mr.Slade was a man of strong political views and was a member of the Porgressive Conservative Party." It goes on to say that Robert Stanfield attended the service. Robert Stanfield was to become Premier of Nova Scotia the year after Jim died and the went on to unsuccessfully run for Prime Minister of Canada.7 He was buried in Bayhead Cemetery, Tatamagouche, Colchester County, Nova Scotia, Canada.6

     John Slade was born on February 19, 1829 in Colchester, Nova Scotia, Canada.1,2 He was the son of Thomas Slade and Janet Campbell.1
     John married Catherine Dunphy on October 16, 1832 in Colchester, Nova Scotia.1,3 His neighbor remembers that "John lived down the bye road turning off at West Tatamagouche school, on the left hand side, near the little brook, and on the opposite side of the road from George Slade."4 John Slade was a Baptist, and a farmer.5 John died on February 18, 1905 at age 75.1 He was buried in Bayhead Cemetery, Tatamagouche, Colchester County, Nova Scotia, Canada.1,6
