Daniel Denison Slade M.D. was born on May 10, 1823 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the son of Jacob Tilton Slade and Elizabeth Rogers.2,3
Daniel married Mina Louise Hensler on May 27, 1856 in Boston, Massachusetts, in King's Chapel.4,2 1860 census lists wife as Ann L, 22, b Sweden.5 Daniel died on March 3, 1896 at age 723 and was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Mattapan, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.3
He was graduated at Harvard in 1844, and at the medical department in 1848 with the appointment of house surgeon to the Massachusetts general hospital. In 1849 he went abroad for the purpose of higher studies, and on his return in 1852 he settled in practice in Boston, where he continued until 1863.
Dr. Slade then gradually relinquished his profession for literary and horticultural pursuits, and in 1870 was chosen professor of applied zoology in Harvard, which chair he held for twelve years. In 1884 he was appointed assistant in the Museum of comparative zoology and lecturer on comparative osteology in Harvard.
During the civil war he was appointed one of the inspectors of hospitals under the United States sanitary commission, and for some time he was house surgeon of the Boston dispensary. He is a member of the Massachusetts medical society and of the Boston society of medical improvement.
Dr. Slade won the Piske prize by his essays on " Diphtheria" in 1850 and "Aneurism" in 1852, the Boylston prize by one on "Spermatorrhma" in 1857, and the Massachusetts medical prize by one on " Bronchitis" in 1859. In addition to his contributions to medical, agricultural, and horticultural journals, he published "Diphtheria, its Nature and Treatment" (Philadelphia, 1861).
