Cooke Fitzhugh Slade was born in July, 1850 in Fairfax County, Virginia. [Cooke's age was recorded as 5/12 in the census taken Oct 1850]2 He was the son of William Otis Slade and Julianna Fitzhugh.3,2 He was apparently named in honor of his grandfather: Mordecai Cooke Fitzhugh and great-grandmother Susannah Cooke. In 1870, Cooke, Selena and their mother Juliana were living with Aunt Mary Mason and grandmother, Francis Fitzhugh. They all indicated real property in following amounts & their ages: Cooke, 19, 2,000; Selena, 21, 2,000; Francis Fitzhugh, 86, 5,500; Henrietta Clowes, 44, 4,000; Mary A. Mason, 42, 3,000 & 800 personal.4 In 1880, Cooke was living with the family of Phillip M. Edmunds 36, listed as brother-in-law. Phillip's wife Selina was Cooke's sister.5
Cooke married Sarah Elliott circa 1887.6 Cooke died in 1937 and was buried in Falls Church Episcopal Church Cemetery, Falls Church, Virginia.7

He retired in 1986 from Smithfield Packing Co. after 25 years of service; was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II; a charter member of the Wakefield Jaycees; a member of Wakefield Vol. Fire Dept; and attended The Shrine of the Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church in Wakefield.
Mr. Slade is survived by his devoted wife, Rose Marie Ingram Slade; two sons, Kenneth J. Slade Jr. and wife, Donna, of Colonial Heights, and Michael B. Slade and wife, Lee Ann, of Midlothian; four grandchildren, AI Slade, Brad Slade, Brittany Slade and Braeden Slade; one great-granddaughter, Hannah Slade; a sister, Edna S. Pitts of Goochland; and several nieces and nephews. He was a brother of the late Robert J. Slade Jr. and the late Mary S. Price.
A Christian Wake will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, at The Shrine of the Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church, Wakefield, by Father Carl DeSouza. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at the church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29. Burial with military rites will follow in Wakefield Cemetery.2

Armistead married Robert James Slade Jr., son of Robert James Slade and Edna Estell Whitemore, on December 4, 1938 in Richmond, Virginia.1 Armistead died on December 30, 2003 in Virginia at age 86.3,4 She was buried in Union Church Cemetery, Dendron, Surry County, Virginia.2 SURRY - Armistead Ingram Slade, 86, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, with her loving daughter by her side. Armistead was a 1934 graduate of Dendron High School; a member of Dendron United Methodist Church; and in 1993 retired from the Surry County Commissioner of Revenue's office and the Office of Property Owners' Records and Maps after 20 years of service. She was active in 4-H Club leadership and served as president of the Virginia Association of 4-H Leaders. Mrs. Slade is survived by her daughter, Donna Leigh Slade of Surry, and devoted loved one, Paul Crogen of Peak, S.C; three sisters, Arlene I. Taylor of Dendron, Erna I. Rogers of Franklin, and Norma I. Poling of Broomfield, Colo; and a number of loving relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John Ingram and Faison Ingram. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Purviance Funeral Home Chapel, Wakefield, with the Rev. Ray Rowling officiating. Burial will be held in Union Church Cemetery, Dendron. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Dendron Volunteer Fire Dept., Surry Vol. Fire Dept., or a charity of choice.
