     James Bernard Slade was born on August 9, 1927 in Virginia.1,2 He was the son of Eddie Marable Slade and Rhea Louise Wiltgen.1 James died on September 17, 1999 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, at age 723 and was buried in Independence Christian Church Cemetery, Beaverdam, Hanover County, Virginia.3 His obituary read as follows:

James ''Bernie'' Slade, 72, passed away Sept. 17, 1999, in a local hospital after a brief illness.

He was a resident of Virginia Beach for the last 25 years and was a member of Hope Lutheran Church.'

He is survived by four sisters, Emily Kristo and Patty Taylor, both of Virginia Beach, Doris Henley of Richmond and Elaine Hatcher of South Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Hope Lutheran Church by the Rev. Thomas Clocker, pastor, and the Rev. Arne Kristo. A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Independence Christian Church Cemetery, Ashland, Va., by the Rev. Kenneth Couthorne. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel.

     Paris Emmet Slade was born on September 27, 1860 in Surry County, Virginia.2,1 He was the son of Wyatt Slade and Martha Jane Holdsworth.3 The Regiment Muster Roll of the Surry Calvary for June 16, 1884 included Corporal Paris E. Slade, age 24.4 He served as a Corporal in the Surry Cavalry in 1885.1
     Paris married Adelena Andrews Wells in 1887.1,5 Paris died on March 7, 1913 at age 521 and was buried in Wakefield UMCh Cemetery, Wakefield, Sussex County, Virginia.1,6

     Wyatt Slade IV was born on January 4, 1946 in Newport News, Newport News County, Virginia.2 He was the son of Wyatt Slade III and Cloteal Hill.1,3
     Wyatt married Mary Elizabeth Kay McPheeters, daughter of Harold McPheeters, in 1968 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina.1,4 Wyatt died on September 1, 2000 in Hopewell, Virginia, at age 54.3 He was buried in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, Chesterfield County, Virginia.3 His obituary read as follows:

      Wyatt Slade, 54, of Hopewell, Virginia died Friday, September 1, 2000 in MCV Hospital. He was born in Newport News and was raised in Surry County. He was the son of the late Wyatt Slade III and Cloteal Hill Slade. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of Vietnam and was retired from Honeywell. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, DuPont Lodge 289, AF & AM, Petersburg Union Royal Arch Chapter #7, Appomattox Commandery #6, Petersburg, ACCA Temple Shrine, Richmond, Past Worshipful Master of Wakefield Lodge #198 AF & AM, Past Worthy Patron of Adah Chapter #7, Eastern Star, Hopewell Shrine Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Loyal Order of Moose, Hopewell.
     Mr. Slade is survive by his wife, Kay Slade; and daughter, Kathy Slade of Hopewell. The family will receive friends at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Bill Wash, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.3

      Mary Katherine "Kathy" Cloteal Slade, 45, of Hopewell, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2015. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Harold and Katherine McPheeters; and father, Wyatt Slade. Kathy was a graduate of Richard Bland College. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and a member of Women of the Moose in Hopewell. Kathy was also the executive chef at the Hopewell Moose Lodge.

She is survived by her wife, Anne Slade; mother, Kay McPheeters Slade; daughter, Sarah Rockwell and her husband, Steven; grandchildren, Jacob, Matthew, Alex, and Andrew; mother-in-law, Marian Marks and her husband, Dale; cousins, Loretta McPheeters and Barbara Taylor.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, May 11, 2015, at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at First United Methodist Church, 502 W. Broadway St., Hopewell, VA 23860. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.      Wiley F. Slade was born in 1828 in South Carolina.1 He was the son of E. H. Slade and Mary [?].1 Wiley bought 159.72 acres at Greenville Land office by cash sale under 1820 Homestead Act. The land description is 1 N½SW ST STEPHENS No 11N 8E 23; 2 S½SE ST STEPHENS No 11N 8E 15.2 Wiley died on January 1, 1865 Burial Register indicates he was in 21st Alabama Regiment.3 He was buried in Woodlawn National Cemetery, Elmira, Chemung County, New York.3
