     Betty Hummer was born on June 8, 1926 in Ephrata, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.1 She was the daughter of Reuben and Fannie Hummer.1
     Betty married Dr. Harry Warren Slade M. D., son of Leon Harrison Slade and Clara Nestrom, in 1950 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.1 As a cadet in the Army Air Forces Fighter Command Aircraft Warning Services, she was a spotter for enemy aircraft during WWII. Betty graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in 1947 and worked as an RN at University Hospital in Philadelphia.1 Betty died on February 21, 2011 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas, at age 84.1

Her obituary in the Waco Tribune-Herald read as follows:
[:TAB:]Betty Hummer Slade, 84, passed away peacefully at home Monday, Feb. 21, 2011. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with the Rev. Curtis Holland officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Garden Room.
     Betty was born June 8, 1926, in Ephrata, Pa., to Reuben and Fannie Hummer and graduated from Ephrata High School in 1944. As a cadet in the Army Air Forces Fighter Command Aircraft Warning Services, she was a spotter for enemy aircraft during WWII. Betty graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in 1947 and worked as an RN at University Hospital in Philadelphia, where she met and married Harry W. Slade, M.D., in 1950. They moved to Waco in April of 1957, where Dr. Slade opened a neurosurgical practice, and she devoted herself to raising their children and her community activities.
     She was a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church and the Mixon Sunday School Class, Harston Study Club, Kappa Delta Sorority, the Women's Auxiliary to the McLennan County Medical Society, the Thursday Group, and several other civic organizations. Her passions also included gourmet cooking, needlework, playing bridge, gardening, traveling and supporting the Baylor Bears.
     She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Richard and Eugene Hummer; sister, Floy Thatcher; as well as her granddaughter, Danielle Bennetzen.
     She is survived by her husband, Harry; children, Theodore L. Slade, M.D., and wife, Jennifer, of Longview, Cynthia A. Bennetzen and husband, Gregory, of Conroe, and Steven L. Slade and Christina L. Slade, AuD, both of Houston; grandchildren, Jeffrey M. Slade, J.D., and wife, Kimberly, of Dallas, James Douglas Slade and wife, Laura, of Fort Worth, and Benjamin M. Bennetzen and Christopher M. Bennetzen, both of Conroe; great-grandchildren, James and Jackson Slade of Dallas; sisters, June Haldeman of Ephrata, and Janet Godshall and husband, Karl, of Tom's River, N.J; and numerous nieces and nephews.
     Published in Waco Tribune-Herald from February 23 to February 25, 2011.1

     Ruth J. Slade was born on November 12, 1922 in Virginia, St. Louis County, Minnesota.1,2 She was the daughter of Samuel May Slade and Violet Martin.1 Ruth died on April 15, 2010 in Madonna Meadows, Rochester, St. Louis County, Minnesota, at age 87.2 She was buried in Grandview Memorial Gardens, Rochester, Minnesota.2 Her obituary read as follows:

      ROCHESTER - Ruth J. Slade, 87, died Thursday, April 15, 2010, at Madonna Meadows in Rochester. Ruth was born in Virginia, Minn., on Nov. 12, 1922, to Samuel and Violet (Martin) Slade. She graduated from the Methodist Kahler School of Nursing and from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor of science degree in public health.
Ruth was a public health nurse in Olmsted County and then worked at the Rochester State Hospital in the Education Department. She also was on the faculty for the Methodist Kahler School of Nursing. Prior to retirement, Ruth worked as a nurse epidemiologist in the Infectious Control Department at Rochester Methodist Hospital.
She was a member of the Cadet Corp in World War II. Ruth enjoyed painting and all sports, especially golf and tennis, and was a state champion for Virginia, Minn., in swimming in 1940.
Ruth is survived by Dr. Kathy Konzen, of San Diego, Calif., whom Ruth mentored and considered as a daughter; nieces and nephews, Sandra Maroste, of Virginia, Sam Slade, of Tucson, Ariz., Susan (Mike) Thomas, of Richfield, Minn., Sally Ruth Dixon, of Santa Clara, Calif., Bonnie (Jerry) Zimmerman, of Cambridge, John (Sharon) Huyber, of Rochester, Nancy Slade Nelson, of Rochester, Steven (Cynthia) Huyber, of Rochester, Marcia Brooke, of St. Paul, Leonard (Jane) Slade, of Edina, Minn., Judy (Kent) Netz, of Oregon, Ill., Sherry (Frank) Anderson, of Pleasant Grove, Utah, and Betty (Dean) Christensen, of Maple Grove, Minn; and 43 grand nieces and nephews; and 60 great-grand nieces and nephews. Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and a sister.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home with the Rev. Nick Mezacapa officiating. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens.2
