James Slade was born in March, 1816 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.1 He was the son of Robert Slade and Nancy Kendall. James Slade, at one time City Engineer of Boston, died in Roslindale Friday night, aged 66 years and five months. Mr. Slade was a civil engineer of high rank, and during his lifetime was connected with a number of important works. He succeeded Mr. E.S. Chesbrough as City Engineer in 1855, and held the office until 1862, when he was succeeded by Mr. N. Henry Crafts. He was employed as consulting engineer during the building of the water works in Washington, D.C., Hartford, Conn., Salem, Mass., St. John, N.B., and Baltimore, Md. Of late years he has lived at Biddeford, Me.1 James died on August 25, 1882 in Roslindale, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, at age 66.1 He was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Mattapan, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.1
