John Wesley Slade

(circa 1813 - 28 March 1840)
John Wesley Slade was born circa 1813 in Richmond, Virginia.1 He was the son of John Slade and Martha T. Pulliam.1 John Wesley Slade was named as a minor in the 1826 will of his father, along with his sister Mary, brother Bartholomew and cousin James A. Slade, son of Jonah Slade.1 John W. settled in Sparta, Illinois about 1833, according to the notice of his death.2

John married Susan H. McCurkin on January 9, 1834 in Randolph County, Illinois.3,4 On July 26, 1837 he purchased 36.87 acres of land in Randolph County, Illinois, being the NW/NW of Section 7, Twp 05 South, Range 5 West of 3rd Meridian.5 John Wesley Slade died on March 28, 1840 in Sparta, Randolph County, Illinois, In Sparta, Illinois, where he had lived for 7 years, on March 28, John W. Slade, a native of Richmond, Va., leaving a widow and son, 16 months old.6,2,7

RESEARCH NOTE: At first, it appeared that this was the same John Wesley Slade who was father of James Adkins Slade who had lived in Randolph, IL and later moved to Missouri. However, this John was still a minor in 1826, so he would have been born after 1805. The father of John Adkins Slade would have been born earlier in order to have a son born 1814. Also, John W. Slade's 1840 death notice in the Illinois newspaper mentioned only his widow and 16 month old son leading us to conclude that this could not be the same John Wesley Slade as father of John Adkins Slade. We would welcome input from any researcher of this family.1

Jahue Gustave Slade1,2

(5 December 1889 - 7 July 1975)
Jahue Gustave Slade was born on December 5, 1889 in Texas.3,4,2 He was the son of John Thomas Slade and Anna Marie Lucerne.5 The 1900 census shows Gustavus Slade, 10, son, living in the household of Isaac Vinson, born 1859 in Mississippi. Isaac's wife is Anna M. Vinson, 41, born Switzerland, married 10 years and mother of one child, who is living. It also indicates she was married to Vinson 7 years ago. Gustavus's father is listed as born England and his mother Switzerland, leading us to believe that Isaac Vinson is not his father.6
Jahue married Minnie Othelda Homesley, daughter of John Mosley Homesley and Birtie E. Streater, circa 1913.7 He was recorded as Jerry D Slade in the 1930 Limestone census.3 Jahue died on July 7, 1975 in Mexia, Limestone County, Texas, at age 85.2 He was buried in Mexia City Cemetery, Limestone County, Texas.8,2
