Charles Slade Jr.1,2
(4 May 1792 - 11 July 1834)
Charles Slade Jr. was christened on May 4, 1792 in Saint Austell, Cornwall, England.1,3 He was the son of Charles Slade and Mary Oates. He immigrated to the United States with his parents, who settled in Alexandria, Virginia. He attended the public schools there. About 1816, Charles and his two brothers, Thomas and William, migrated westward. They were all single at the time. In November, 1816, Charles purchased 289.47 acres in what later became Carlyle Township, Clinton County, Illinois.4
Charles married Mary Darke Kain on June 23, 1819 in Illinois, USA.5
By an act of the Illinois legislature of 1824, a new county was formed from the counties of Washington, Bond and Fayette; the county to be called Clinton, with the seat of justice to located at Carlyle, on condition that a donation of land should be made to the town of not less that twenty acres. The donation, or deed, was made by Charles and Mary D. Slade, and was placed on record the 4th of July, 1825. Thus, Charles Slade became known as the "father" of Carlyle, Illinois.
Charles and Mary Slade were widely known and highly respected in the community and surrounding area. They were known to hold many gala events in their hospitable Carlyle home, with high ranking political acquaintances as well as the other socialites of the area as their guests. Charles and Mary were one of the few families in the area that had servants.5
Charles Slade was engaged in mercantile pursuits; held several local offices, was a member of the Illinois State House of Representatives in 1820 and 1826, then elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-third Congress of the United States and served from March 4, 1833, until his death. On his return home from Washington in the spring of 1834, when near Vincennes, Indiana, he was taken suddenly sick with the cholera.5,6,7 On July 11, 1834 in near Vincennes, Knox Co., Indiana, USA, at age 42.8,9,6 His remains were taken home to Carlyle for interment. Thus ended the career of one of the pioneers of Carlyle, and substantial men of his time.8 His obituary read as follows:
An obituary of Charles Slade was published in the Alexandria Gazette [VA] on July 26, 1834. It read as follows.6
