James Thomas Slade was born on June 23, 1923 in Macon County, Illinois.1 He was the son of Joseph Lawrence Slade and Marie Stephens.2 He began serving his country in the Navy at the young age of 18. Jim is a Pearl Harbor survivor and life member of Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and was aboard the USS Raleigh when it was sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He later witnessed the signing of the peace treaty at the end of World War II. He was commissioned as a lieutenant when he joined the Army at the beginning of the Korean War. He was decorated with numerous military awards.3
James married Martha "Mickey" Redmon, daughter of Roscoe W. Redmon and Elva [?], on April 23, 1944 in Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island,3, the daughter of Elva Rowe & Roscoe W Redmon.4
James married second Beatrice Harner, daughter of Harold Harner, on May 27, 1998 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.3 James died on July 8, 2003 at age 80.1,3 He was buried in Fairlawn Cemetery, Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.5 His obituary read as follows:
DECATUR - James Thomas Slade, 80, of Decatur died 1:32 p.m. Tuesday (July 8, 2003) in St. Mary's Hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Dawson & Wikoff West Wood Street Funeral Home with visitation 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery with military rites by the Macon County Honor Guard. Memorials: American Cancer Society or St. John's Hospice Care.

He was a graduate of the University of Louisville Southern Police Institute. He was an active lifetime member of the Police Benevolent Association. He was a Realtor in Decatur for many years and a Life Time Million Dollar Club member. He worked several years for Rambo Pharmacy as an apprentice pharmacist after receiving his license in 1959. He was part of a group that founded the first Armored Service in Decatur, which was eventually bought out by Brinks.

Jr. and wife Sherri of Decatur; Joel and wife Melody of Marble Falls, Texas; Tim and wife Lori of Oreana; Chris Slade; nieces, Julie M. Mendenhall and husband Todd of Decatur; stepsons, David and Steven Harner of Decatur; stepdaughter, Jeanne Brace of Champaign; stepgrandchildren, Katie and Ben Brace and Dava Askins; great-grandchildren, Jourdan and Jalyn Pearce and Samantha McVey; great-stepgrandchild, Bryanna Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife and one brother.
