Mrs. Slade was born in Decatur on July 31, 1924, the daughter of Roscoe W. and Elva Redmon. She was a 1942 graduate of Decatur High School. She attended Millikin University and was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Martha was a lifetime member of St. John's Episcopal Church, past president of Easter Seals, a volunteer at the Macon County Health Department for 12 years, a Cub Scout den mother, a member of the Decatur Police Benevolent Women's Auxiliary and an advertising sales volunteer for the Millikin Symphony Guild for many years. She married

James T. Slade on April 23, 1944, in Newport, R.I. They recently celebrated 53 years of marriage.

Surviving are her husband; son, James T. III and wife Eileen; granddaughters, Leslie and Nancy; great-granddaughter, Jourdan Pearce; many loving relatives, neighbors and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, William Rowe Redmon.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred Reynolds; his brother, Gene Wambecke; his first wife, Louise Slade, and his second wife Catherine Conway Slade. Mr. Slade is survived by Louise's five children: Henry F. Twilley (Judy), Selma, AL; Peggy Tillman, of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; June Franklin, Trussville, AL; Betty Shepherd, Deerfield Beach, FL; Diane Usher (John), Hoover, AL; and Catherine's three children, Charles McDill (Nancy), Montgomery, AL; Patti Tunnell, Trussville, AL; and Norma J. Tucker, Centerpoint, AL; 16 grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a nephew, and a niece. Mr. Slade was a WWII Army veteran and he retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad. He was a member of Liberty Park Baptist Church. A graveside service will be held Thursday for the immediate family at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East "Last Supper" mausoleum, with Dr. James Sampley officiating. Jefferson Memorial in Trussville is directing.

Sam Barrett Slade

(19 September 1920 - 23 October 2006)
     Sam Barrett Slade was born on September 19, 1920 in Roberta, Crawford County, Georgia.1 He was the son of Ben Turner Slade and Nell Louisa Barrett.
     Sam married Patricia Lenore Thomas.1 He enlisted in the Georgia National Guard in 1941 and served in the Southwest Pacific during World War II in 1942. He re-enlisted in 1962, and spent a total of 39 years in the Army Reserve and Alabama National Guard . In his civilian work he was in the retail building materials and construction business until his retirement.
      Sam died on October 23, 2006 in Eufaula, Barbour County, Alabama, at age 86.2 He was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Eufaula, Barbour County, Alabama.3

     Sam served as Mayor of Eufaula from 1988 to 1992, and was hailed as a progressive leader who brought the town into the 21st century. He was an active civic volunteer and leader before and after his mayoral term. Besides his distinguished military career that spanned nearly four decades, he also served as:
