Mary Darke Kain1

(10 August 1799 - 14 January 1873)
Mary Darke Kain was born on August 10, 1799 in Harper's Ferry, Jefferson County, Virginia.1 Mary was the daughter of John Kain and Mary Darke, natives of Virginia. When the tide of immigration began, John Kain was one of the first to move westward to southern Illinois. John Kain was one of the enterprising men of the early times. He brought up a very respectable family of five children, and died at an old age, in the spring of 1833. Mary Kain, his wife, died many years before her husband. John Kain’s land records were some of the first entries in Clinton County, Illinois: 27 June 1818, John Kain entered lots 2 and 3 in sect. 7, 199 acres in Township 2 North, Range 2 West. 18 January 1818, John Kain entered the south-east quarter section 13, Township 2 North, Range 3 West.1
Mary married Charles Slade Jr., son of Charles Slade and Mary Oates, on June 23, 1819 in Illinois, USA.1 Charles, Jr. was a United States Congressman from Illinois and a founder of the town of Carlyle, Illinois.1
Four years after the death of her first husband, Charles. Mary married Elias Smith Dennis on February 24, 1838 in Marion County, Illinois.1 Mary Darke Kain Slade Dennis died on January 14, 1873 at age 731,2 and was buried in Carlyle Cemetery, Carlyle, Clinton County, Illinois, USA.2 Her obituary, published Thursday, January 23, 1873 in The Union Banner, Carlyle, Illinois read as follows:

Died - At her home, in this place, on Wednesday evening, 16th inst., Mrs. Mary D. Dennis, aged 73 years, 5 months and 5 days.

The deceased was one of the oldest residents of this place, having lived here since 1818, the year that Illinois was admitted into the Union as a state, fifty-five years ago. She was born near Harper's Ferry, in Jefferson county, Virginia, August 10th, 1799, from whence she came with her father to Illinois, direct to Carlyle in the year 1818.
She was married twice. First on the 23d of June, 1819, to Hon. Chas. SLADE, one of the pioneers of Illinois, and a man who was widely known and highly respected. In the year 1832 her husband, Mr. Slade, was elected to Congress, and died on the 11th of July, 1834. Of those who resided in southern Illinois at that early period, there are but few who will not remember Mr. Slade and his hospitable house in Carlyle.
After remaining four years a widow, Mrs. Slade was married the second time, on the 24th of February 1838, to Mr. Elias S. Dennis, with whom she lived until his ignominious desertion a few years ago. The life of the deceased has been altogether an eventful one, one full of pleasures in her early years, and crowded with sorrows ere the close, and we will, therefore, draw a vail over that which is past.
She died peacefully, and let us hope the cares and sorrows which were hers in this world ceased with the departure of her spirit to that other which we know not of.3
