He proudly served his country during WWII active duty from October 26, 1943, till being honorably discharged on Feb 9, 1946, at Camp Fannin, TX, serving in England, France and Germany with the 441st Squadron of the 320th Bomb Group. He flew 19 combat missions in the B26 Martin Marauder better known as the Widow Maker as radio operator and gunner. He was honored to have participated in the Dow Honor Flight for WWII veterans held in September of 2011. After the war he attended the University of Houston on the GI Bill then began his career in Instrumentation with Dow Chemical Company in 1947. Hired as an Instrument Helper, he worked for 35 years until retiring in 1982 as an Instrument Technical Specialist working on projects in Louisiana, Brazil, and Alberta, Canada. After retirement he and his wife, Freddie, moved to their ranch in De Kalb, Texas, to raise cattle and enjoy life a little slower. He was also a 50-year Member of Lake Jackson Masonic Lodge 1317 and the Litt S Perry #111 commandery of Knights Templar of Texas. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Winifred (Freddie) McClure Slade; his son, John Michael (Mike) Slade; his parents, John Sr. and Gertrude Slade; and sister, Shirley Groves. Those who loved him greatly and grieve his passing are his children, twin daughters, Sandra Slade of Brazoria, Texas, Susan Slade Bowers and husband, Ted of Red Rock, Texas; and son, Richard R. Slade and wife, Cindy of De Kalb, Texas; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who lovingly called him Granddaddy; and his sister, Patricia Thomas of Houston, Texas. He loved this country of ours and served it well to protect our freedom during WWII. On a family vacation to Florida's Disneyworld, at the end of the day, our US flag was being taken down from the flagpole near the entrance. When he saw this, he immediately stopped, removed his hat placing it over his heart and waited silently and reverently until the flag was folded. That moment will forever be remembered — for he was a man who loved his country, his family, the freedoms we hold dear and his heavenly Father.Services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 6, 2013, at Bates Family Funeral Home in De Kalb, Texas, with Ted Bowers and the Rev.
