Milton William Slade

(29 January 1909 - 1 August 1991)
     Milton William Slade was born on January 29, 1909 in Bristol, Hartford County, Connecticut.1 He was the son of William Edward Slade and Grace Ethel Pond.
     Milton married Marie Agnes Northrop.2 Milton died on August 1, 1991 in Torrington, Litchfield County, Connecticut, at age 82.1 He was buried in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol, Hartford County, Connecticut.3 His obituary read as follows:

      Milton W. Slade, retired operator of Bristol Memorial Works in Bristol and the Baldwin Monumental Works in Torrington, died Thursday at his home in Torrington. He was eighty-two.
Slade was a past president of the Connecticut Monument Builders and a member of the Monument Builders of America. He retired in 1986.
He was a past grand knight of the Knights of Columbus in Bristol, where he had been a member for fifty years.
Slade was a member of the Torrington Lodge of Elks, the Lions Club, the Eagles Club, the Forresters, the Torringford Grange, and the Holy Family Retreat League.
He leaves his wife of sixty-one years, Marie Northrop Slade; a son, William Slade of Cheshire; eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Another son, Richard Slade, died in 1987.
The funeral will be held on Monday at 9:45 a.m. at Gleeson Mortuary, 258 Prospect Street, Torrington, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Francis Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol.
Calling hours at Gleeson Mortuary will be held on Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Judith Leonard

(23 December 1934 - 11 August 2004)
     Judith Leonard was born on December 23, 1934 in Torrington, Litchfield County, Connecticut.1,2 She was the daughter of Earl Johnson Leonard and Laura Duplain.
     Judith married M. William Slade, son of Milton William Slade and Marie Agnes Northrop, on August 20, 1955.1 Judith died on August 11, 2004 in Hartford County, Connecticut, at age 69.2,3 She was buried in Hillside Cemetery, Cheshire, New Haven County, Connecticut.3 Her obituary read as follows:

      Judith (Leonard) Slade, 69, of Southington, Misquamicut Beach, R.I., Satellite Beach, Fla., and formerly of Cheshire, died Aug. 11, 2004, after a period of declining health from pancreatic cancer. She was the wife of M. William Slade Jr. for 48 year; they were married Aug. 20, 1955, in Torrrington.

She was born Dec. 23, 1934, in Torrington, the daughter of the late Earle J. and Laura Duplain Leonard. She was the 11th-generation descendant of William and Judith Learned (Leonard), who came from England in 1632, settling in Charlestown, Mass. She retired from the business office of the Cheshire Department of Education after 23 years as manager of payroll. She had served as a volunteer at the Westerly Hospital in Rhode Island.

Besides her husband, she is survived by six children, Laurie Slade and her partner, James Bartelmo; Todd Slade and his fiancee, Nancy Brunetti; Lynn and her husband, Gary Beard; Karen S. Hekeler; Barry Slade and his wife, Victoria; and Kevin Slade and his wife, Heidi. She is survived by 16 grandchildren; Kate, Anne and Sara Bartelmo and Alex Soriano; Reid, Whitney and Kylie Slade; Eric and Matthew Beard; Kenneth Hekeler; Laura, Dylan and Brandon Slade; Max, Connor and Kirsten Slade; and David and Karen Brunetti. She also is survived by two brothers, Robert Leonard and his wife, Martha, of Torrington, and Francis (Ozzie) Leonard and wife, Rita, of West Hartford; and a sister, Marilyn, and her husband, Joseph Romanski, of Norwich. A Mass was celebrated Aug. 14 at the Immaculate Conception Church, Southington. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Cheshire. Memorial donations may be made to the Franciscan Hospice Care, 267 Finch Ave., Meriden, CT 06451-2715. The DellaVecchia Funeral Home, Southington, was in charge of arrangements.
