Richard passed unexpectedly, after a brief illness with his family by his side. He is predeceased by his parents, Robert & Ruth Slade; sister, Donna Gifaldi. He is survived by his children, Linda Wasmuth (Doug Camp), John Slade (Shelly Turner) & Elizabeth (Don) Iafe; ex-wife, Bonnie Slade; step-daughter, Janine (Mark) Green; 12 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; siblings, Daniel (Eileen) Slade, David (Marie) Slade, Barbara (Gary) Maleck, Peggy (Joe) Leone, Ellen (Jackie) Slade & Karen (John) Rheinheimer; several nieces and nephews; many dear friends.

Richard's visitation will be held Wednesday, March 19th, 4-8 P.M. at Vay-Schleich & Meeson Funeral Home, Greece Chapel, 1075 Long Pond Road. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, March 20th, 9:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 296 Flower City Park. Interment will follow Mass in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.2

He was born in Bondville on Dec. 7, 1924, the son of Robert and Hazel (Lackey) Slade. An Army veteran of World War II, he served for more than two years with the 38th Infantry Division in the European Theater of Operations. Following military service, Mr. Slade attended Castleton Teachers' College and received his teaching degree in 1950. For a time, he was president of Castleton Alumni Association. His 30-year teaching career took him to Vergennes, St. Johnsbury, Brattleboro and Manchester. He served on the Winhall School Board, as town and school moderator, and was instrumental in establishing the Winhall Memorial Library. Mr. Slade was a charter patron of Mountain Home Grange and a member of Bondville Methodist Church. He was an avid philately collector and enjoyed his flowers and plants. Survivors include two sisters, Ola Balch of Hartland and Joyce Ameden of Bondville; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins; and his companion, Thomas Dutton. He was predeceased by a brother, Ora Slade, in 1979. Burial will be at a later date in Bondville Cemetery.3

Ola J. Balch, 94, of Hartland, VT, formerly of North Walpole, NH, died peacefully on Saturday, January 9, 2016. She was born in Winhall, VT on July 3, 1921. She attended Leland and Gray Seminary in Townshend, VT, and grew up with three siblings on a small family farm where she enjoyed loading and driving the hay wagon. Her father was proud that she could get more hay on a wagon than any hired man could. She held jobs waitressing and housekeeping throughout her adulthood, and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and sewing. She will be remembered for her positive attitude and warm smile. She will be dearly missed by her sister, Joyce Ameden of Bondville, VT, three daughters, Bettina Read of Hartland, VT, Judith Pratt of Alstead, NH and Janette Balch of Rutland, VT. She was blessed with eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grand-children with another on the way. She was predeceased by two brothers, Ora Slade and John Slade.
