Lena Beatrice Smith1

     Lena Beatrice Smith was born on July 9, 1908 in Brookline, Massachusetts.2 She was the daughter of Nelson B. Smith and Hattie Landfear.2
     Lena married Ora John Slade, son of Robert Benson Slade and Hazel I. Lackey, on March 20, 1935 in Jamaica, Windham County, Vermont.1 Lena died on February 2, 2005 at age 96.2 She was buried in Glebe View Cemetery, South Londonderry, Windham County, Vermont.2 Her obituary read as follows:

      SOUTH LONDONDERRY -- Lena Beatrice Slade, 96, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at Equinox Terrace in Manchester Center.

She was born July 9, 1908, in Brookline, daughter of Nelson B. Smith and Hattie (Landfear) Smith.

She attended schools in South Londonderry.

She married Ora J. Slade on March 20, 1935, in Chester. He predeceased her in 1979 after 44 years of marriage.

She lived most of her life in South Londonderry and was a postal clerk assisting her husband, who was Postmaster. She retired in the 1970s.

She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in South Londonderry for 50 years and served as assistant treasurer for a number of years. She was also a member of the American Legion and the Home Demonstration Group.

She liked to knit and crochet and enjoyed reading romance novels and working on jigsaw puzzles. She enjoyed going out to eat. She was especially fond of flowers and plants.

She is survived by five nieces and three nephews; many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by five siblings, Margaret Jaquith, Ruth Smith, Nelson M. Smith, Robert L. Smith and Herbert O. Smith, all of whom lived in South Londonderry during their lifetimes.

Services will be held in the spring at the First Baptist Church of South Londonderry. Burial will follow in Glebeview Cemetery.
