Helen Elizabeth Benedict M.D.
(9 December 1912 - 24 July 2004)
Helen Elizabeth Benedict M.D. was born on December 9, 1912 in Pennsylvania.1 She was the daughter of John Benedict and Zula [?]2, the daughter of John and Zula Benedict of Waynesboro, PA.
Helen married John de Roulhac Slade M.D., son of Colonel Lester Cowdery Slade and Lucile H. Dunn. Helen died on July 24, 2004 at age 91.1 Her obituary read as follows:
Dr. Helen Slade, 91, kindly psychiatrist
Dr. Helen Slade started her career in medicine treating children. Midway, she switched to psychiatry and cared for troubled adults instead. "When I met Helen during the 1950s, she was at home looking after her own children," said Dr. Dorothy Lee of Marietta. "Just as Helen had done, I had started in medicine as a pediatrician, but then I took up psychiatry. When I told her how much I enjoyed it, she decided she would find it stimulating, too."
Dr. Slade did her residency at Emory University, then practiced at the old Georgia Mental Health Institute and later at the Central DeKalb Mental Health Center. "I worked with Dr. Slade at the DeKalb center. As a clinical social worker, I had many clients in common with her," said Francine Kohler of Atlanta. "Helen was always compassionate and sensitive to the needs of people we served; I often sat in when she interviewed a client. She never was in a hurry and always listened attentively to a client. She had a very sweet spirit."
The funeral for Dr. Slade, 91, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. She died of complications from Alzheimer's disease on Saturday at her Atlanta residence. H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill, is in charge of arrangements.
She did graduate work in biology in the mid-1930s when few women were entering careers in science, said her son, Michael Slade of San Francisco. One of her professors at Columbia University urged her to continue her studies so she wouldn't have to spend the rest of her life in a laboratory. So, she applied to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and was accepted, her son said. While an intern, she met her future husband, the late Dr. John Slade, and after World War II, the two of them settled in Atlanta, where she practiced as a pediatrician before starting her family. Survivors include another son, Stephen Slade of Hamden, Conn; and five grandchildren.3 She was buried in Arlington Memorial Park, Sandy Springs, Fulton County, Georgia.
