      LANSINGBURGH -- Helen S. Liberty, 82, of 4th Avenue, died Sunday at Samaritan Hospital. Born in Lansingburgh, she was the daughter of the late John and Jessie Hoyt Slade. A lifelong resident of Lansingburgh, she was educated at the former Whipple School and Lansingburgh High School. In her earlier years, Mrs. Liberty had been employed at the former Cluett and Peabody Co. in Troy and Montgomery Ward store in Menands. She was a communicant of St. Augustine's Church in Lansingburgh and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society there. She was a member of the Troy Senior Citizens and a former member of the Mother's Club at St. Augustine's School. Wife of Benjamin E. Liberty; mother of Dane E. Liberty of Brunswick and Gary D. Liberty of Lansingburgh; sister of the late Leslie and Clarence Slade, Ruth Godso, Gladys Petersen, Grace McGwire and Florence Slade; also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad Street, (Rt. 32), Waterford and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Augustine's Church, Lansingburgh. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Waterford. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday 4 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home office.4

William Slade1

(4 June 1780 - 7 September 1852)
     William Slade was born on June 4, 1780 in Swansea, Bristol County, Massachusetts.1 He was the son of Jonathan Slade and Mary Chase.
     William married Phebe Lawton, daughter of Dr. William Lawton and Abigail Farrington.2 He was one of the purchasers in 1812 of the land upon which was built the Pocasset Company's mill, one of the first two mills in the then town of Troy (now the city of Fall River), which were the substantial pioneers in the cloth making industry then established in 1813. He was one of the first stockholders in the Fall River Manufactury. He was one of the eight incorporators, in 1822, of the Pocasset Manufacturing Company. In 1826 he began to operate a horseboat across the ferry, and in 1846 a steamboat.2 William died on September 7, 1852 at age 72.3
