James Thomas Slade1

b. 23 June 1923, d. 8 July 2003
     James Thomas Slade was born on June 23, 1923 in Macon County, Illinois.1 He was the son of Joseph Lawrence Slade and Marie Stephens.2 He began serving his country in the Navy at the young age of 18. Jim is a Pearl Harbor survivor and life member of Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and was aboard the USS Raleigh when it was sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He later witnessed the signing of the peace treaty at the end of World War II. He was commissioned as a lieutenant when he joined the Army at the beginning of the Korean War. He was decorated with numerous military awards.3
     James married Martha Redmon, daughter of Roscoe W. Redmon and Elva [?], on April 23, 1944 in Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island.3
     James married second Beatrice Harner, daughter of Harold Harner, on May 27, 1998 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.3 James Thomas Slade died on July 8, 2003 at age 80.1,3 He was buried in Fairlawn Cemetery, Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.4
